Plan to Use of MMRPC as active part of neutron detector • >Resistive plate chamber (MRPC) • +Converter >Cheaper than scintillator+PMT • Already very good time resolution achieved for fast minimum ionizing particle (A. Schutauff NIM 533(2004)65) NIMA314, 136 Datta Pramanik, Prog. Part and Nucl 59 (2007)183-192 A.Leistenschneider et al., PRL 86 (2001) 5542 Design goals: • Detection of a relativistic neutrons in a TOF spectrometer (t<100ps) • Measurement of four momentum vector (dx,dy,dz~1 cm) • Reconstruction of projectile energy with E=30 KeV at 1 MeV • Recognization of multihit neutrons K.Boretzky, U.Datta Pramanik et al, 2005, R3B collaboration
Development of MRPC at SINP, Kolkata: XI plan project (DAE) Funds for prototype from DAE (2007-2012) 0.7 M Euro The planning, designing, fabricating of various parts and building of the detector at SINP, Kolkata (2009) Gas: R134, Isobutene, and SF6 . MMRPC detector is 20 cm X 40 cm: 2, 4, 6 gaps gglass were used with very thin coating conducting layer to build cathode : both national (vergo), international products: Anode plate was made by PCB with 2 cm strip. Local workshop at Kolkata
GAS mixing unit, A. Joshi, RPC2007 Gases used: R134A(88%), SF6(5%), Isobutene (7%) Block diagram of gas mixing system
Various stages of detector building at SINP Conductive layer on glass Full assemble Anode structure
Testing at laboratory using • Gamma source (60Co) • Cosmic background Coincidence set-up of MMRPC and scintillator detectors Presented at International conference on RPC detectors, U.Datta Pramanik et al RPC2010, 10th Feb, Darmstadt
R&D for this detector at India 1. Development of detector: SINP, Kolkata 2. Gas recycling: Alpha Pneumatics+IIT Kharagpur+SINP 3. Electronics: SINP+University of Burdwan+CU+GU 4. Simulation and mechanical structure: Calicut University+ Viswa Bharati University+SINP More institute may join: IIT Roorkee, Aligarh Muslim University, DU, PU, IIIT Madras etc. Money matrix: Cost matrix: RPC based: Scintillators: 2.5 Meuro 3.2 Meuro We ask : 18 Crores Rs. 10 Crores in FAIR ( 1.4 MEuro) 8 Crores : Infrastructure+man power+travel+ R&D etc. at India
Future Plan: • The detector resolution (150-200)ps in offline test • We shall do online test using electron, proton, neutron beam • 2. Build large area detectors (50cm x 1 m), (50cmx2m) • and testing with proton, electron an neutron beam • 3. Exploring Gas recycling (open loop), gas analyzing • Exploring Readout system of RPC • 4. Exploring scintillator as an active part of Neutron detector • with different types readouts • 5. Comparison study with scintillator and MRPC (developed by • different laboratories in NEULAND collaboration) • and expt at GSI (Deuteron beam in 2011) for final selection • Of prototype. • 6. Ask for Fund to build 1/2 of Neuland at India (FAIR-India)
