Early Life • Ahn began skating in elementary school. His coach is Kim Ki-Hoon who has 2 gold medals. Ahn trains 10 hours a day. • The first time he watched television, one of his heroes Chae Ji-Hoon earned a gold and silver medal in speed skating.
Achievements • In the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Ahn got to the finals of the 1000 meter short course event but didn’t get a medal • In the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Ahn won 4 medals. 3 of them were gold he won in 1000 meter and 1500 meter events and another one was the 5000 meters relay. He was the 2nd Korean person to win 3 gold medals in one Olympic. The other medal he won was a bronze medal in the 500 meter event. • Ahn Hyun-Soo is the first Korean to win at least 3 medals in a winter Olympic.
More Achievements • Ahn has won 35 medals in the World Championships. 20 of them were gold, 11 of them were silver, and 4 of them were bronze. • Ahn won 5 gold medals in the 2004 Gothenburg World Championships. • Ahn is the first man to win 5 World Championships.
2008 Injury • In January of 2008, Ahn crashed into a fenceand injured his knee. Because of his injury, he didn’t go to the Samsung world cup series or the 2008 world championships. He also didn’t go to the 2009 world championships. • After 8 months in the hospital, Ahn started training again.
2010 Vancouver Olympics • In the Korean National Team Trials, Ahn finished in 7th place. He needed to be in the top 3 to be in the 2010 Olympics. Because he didn’t get to the top 3, he cannot compete in the 2010 Olympics. Ahn hopes to compete in the 2014 winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. It will probably be his last Olympic game he will compete in.
