Agenda • Metadata • Metadata in SobekCM • Metadata for projects ( existing v. new ) • Importing records (MARC, Spreadsheets, etc..) • Templates • Default Metadata • Upcoming changes • Online submission • Without files • With files • Editing metadata • Uploading new images/files • Editing behaviors online • Adding new volumes online • Adding spatial information to your item and geo-placing a map online (beta)
Metadata in SobekCM • Metadata Architecture • METS • MODS • Extension Schemas • VRACore Example
Metadata Architecture METS Wrapper MODS (or MARC, DC) VRA Core Darwin Core etc.. Additional custom metadata
METS • Metadata Encoding & Transmission Standard • Standard by Library of Congress (2001) • Wrapper standard that accepts any XML schemas • Contains • Information about the METS file in the metsHeader • Bibliographic data in the dmdSec section(s) • Administrative information (technical, rights, etc..) in the amdSec section(s) • List of all files grouped by type in the fileSec section • Divisions/pages (i.e., table of contents) in the structMap section
MODS • Metadata Object Description Standard • Standard by Library of Congress (2002) • De facto standard for digital libraries (METS/MODS) • Positives • Can handle a (large) subset of MARC tags • Handles complex objects and can easily be extended • Negatives • Hard round trip portability from MARC MODS MARC without losing some refinements
Extension Metadata Modules • Core “brain” of SobekCM with main metadata elements represented (based on MODS originally) • Satellite extension metadata modules to add functionality • Out of the “box” SobekCM supports 10 extension metadata modules
Extension Metadata Modules Click to view full version
Extension Metadata Modules • DAITSS ( Archiving schema from FLVC ) • DarwinCore (Zoological taxonomy) • EAD ( Finding guides ) • ETD ( Electronic theses and dissertations ) • GML ( Geo-spatial metadata ) • IEEE-LOM (Learning objects metadata) • Oral history (custom) • PALMM (deprecating) • Performing arts • RightsMD ( detailed access rights or embargo information ) • VRACore ( visual/museum materials )
VRACore Example • Visual Resource Association Core Metadata • Developed in 1996 by Visual Resource Association • Used for describing visual/cultural materials • Includes standard DC tags • Date, title, description, rights, subjects, etc.. • Also more unique tags • Cultural context • Style • Technique • Measurements (detailed) • Etc..
VRACore Example • Pre-existing fields not duplicated • Date, title, description, rights, subjects, etc.. • New objects / fields added • Cultural context • Style • Technique • Measurements (detailed) • etc..
Custom Extension Modules • System supports ability to add new metadata reader/writers to add new extension schemas
Metadata for Projects • Existing v. New? • Format of existing? • Decision Tree • Pros and cons of each approach?
Importing Records Demos • MARC report • Spreadsheet
Templates • Contain the fields (and format) to be provided for online submission (or editing) broken into pages/panels • Options related to online submission • Can submit files(s), url? • MUST submit file(s), url? • Item visibility ( private v. public ) • Include user as author? • Email addresses to receive notification of submissions • Permissions statement • New BibID* root ( i.e., ‘IR’, ‘AA’, ‘CA’, etc.. ) • Stored as XML files at the instance level * Jargon Alert!
Default Metadata • Default metadata (or behaviors) to be applied whenever a new item is submitted through the online interface • Currently stored as METS files at the instance level. • Plan for user-specific default metadata in the near future • Previously called projects
Upcoming Changes • “Finish” help pages (start some) • Ability to upload multiple files • Merge uploading files and images (usability problem) • Ability to upload existing metadata • Reference MARC records in the OPAC / OCLC (Z39.50) • User-specific file holding location
Online Submission Adding a new item through the online web interface
Metadata Editing Editing the metadata for an online item through the web interface
Uploading New Images/Files Adding new images or files to an existing item through the web interface
