Chapter 11 Be able to solve using the Ideal gas Law.
Ideal Gas Law • The Idea gas law is a the mathematical relationship of pressure, volume, temperature, and the number of moles of a gas. • Ideal gas law considers Avogadro’s law that volume is proportional to the number of moles.
Ideal Gas Law • PV = nRT • P = pressure • V = Volume • n = moles • R = constant • T = Temperature
PV = nRT • The equation states that the volume of a gas varies directly with the number of moles (or molecules) of a gas. • Volume varies inversely with pressure • R = 0.0821 L atm/(mol K) • R value will change with pressure
Numerical Values of the Gas Constant, R • 62.4 L mmHg/(mol K) • 0.0821 L atm/(mol k) • 8.314 J/(mol k) • 8.314 L kpa/ (mol k)
Practice • What is the pressure in atmospheres exerted by a 0.500 mol sample of nitrogen gas in a 10L Container at 298K?
More Practice • What is the volume, in liters, of 0.250 mol of oxygen gas at 20C and 0.974 atm pressure?
More Practice • What mass of chlorine gas, Cl2 in grams, is contained in a 10.0 L tank at 27C and 3.50 atm of pressure?
PM=DRT • P = pressure • M = molar mass (g/mol) • D = density g/L • R = .0821 atmxL/molxK • T = temperature in K
Practice • At 28C and .0974 atm, 1L of gas has a mass of 5.16g, what is the molar mass of this gas?
Practice • What is the density of a sample of ammonia gas, NH3, if the pressure is .928 atm and the temperature is 63C?
