Scholarships • Available for engineering students in each academic semester • Based on academic performance • Awarded to the student with the highest average meeting the conditions of the scholarship • Applications • Available at the Office of the Associate Dean (Undergraduate), Room EN4019 • Must submit your scholarship application and resume to room EN4019 no later than 5:00 pm on October 1, 2009

  14. Quizzes, Tests, and Examinations • Quizzes in engineering courses will be held during the lecture/tutorial slots • Midterms in engineering courses will be held on Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm • Final examinations • Week of December 9, 2009

Use of Electronic Devices • Faculty Policies at:www.engr.mun.ca/policies/ • NOT allowed during lectures, tutorials, seminars, or laboratory sessions: • Computers (class dependent) • Cell Phones, PDAs, Personal Entertainment Devices (PEDs) • NOT allowed during quizzes, tests and examinations: • Calculator features: text-storage, graphics, matrix manipulation, and programmable capability • Other devices - Laptops, portable computers, PDAs, PEDs, cell phones, electronic dictionaries

Safety Issues • Must attend all seminars dealing with public, personal and industrial safety, and occupational health and safety legislation • Students must satisfy the first-aid, and occupational health and safety requirements • Must have the appropriate safety gear (Safety boots, eye protection, etc.) to use the labs so designated • Wash hands regularly • Occupational Health and Safety Act http://www.assembly.nl.ca/legislation/sr/statutes/o03.htm

Complementary Studies Component • Provides awareness of the function and responsibilities of the Professional Engineer in society and the impact that engineering in all its forms has on environmental, economic, social and cultural aspects of our society • Complements the technical expertise developed in the ‘engineering’ courses • Consists of 21 credit hours or 7 courses over the duration of the program

Promotions • Clear promotion: • at least 60% in each of MATH 1001, MATH 2050, PHYS 1051, CHEM 1050 • at least 50% in each of ENGI 1010, ENGI 1020, ENGI 1030 and ENGI 1040; • at least 65% average over the above eight courses • Successful completion of English 1080 • Fail • Promotion average less than 65% or failing to meet the required average

  20. Selection of Majors • This is a competitive process based on the promotion averages! • Not all students will get their first choice of disciplines!!! • Any questions?

Dean’s List • Named to the Dean’s List for the academic year at the end of the winter semester • Student criteria • Be in the top 10% of the class • Have at least 80% average in each of two of the three previous academic semesters • Have at least 3.5 GPA • Have completed at least 27 credit hours of courses in the two semesters under consideration

  23. Academic survival tips Top 10 list: • Check your @mun.ca email • Visit “Current Students” website regularly or when looking for info • Attend classes regularly • Practice time management – you will have competing demands • Participate in and contribute to your classes

  24. Academic survival tips Top 10 list (cont.): • Do assigned problems, even if not mandatory • Ask questions and be responsible for your own learning • Develop good study habits • Ask for help – colleagues, profs, etc • Be confident … but work hard
