  1. LET’S GO ON A FIELD TRIP!! A PERSUASIVE ESSAY/POWERPOINT PRESENTATION

  2. WRITING SITUATION • THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS AT JOHN H. WALKER MIDDLE SCHOOL HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO GO ON A CLASS FIELD TRIP. STUDENTS WANT THAT TO CHANGE, BUT FIRST THEY MUST PERSUADE THE ADMINISTRATION.

  3. WRITING TASK • YOU AND YOUR PARTNER WILL CHOOSE THREE REASONS WHY GOING ON A FIELD TRIP IN SEVENTH GRADE WOULD BE BENEFICIAL. ALL REASONS MUST BE SUPPORTED BY THREE SUPPORTING DETAILS.

  4. SLIDES • You must have a minimum of nine slides. You may have more if you are adding animation, graphics, hyperlinks, etc.

  5. ASSIGNMENT • Each pair/group should have a flashdrive that they can save their work on. If both partners do not have a flashdrive, please see me for help for saving. • Working with your partner, first choose the three main reasons why you think you should be able to go on a field trip. Once you choose your three main reasons, begin to discuss the details you will use to support those reasons. Remember THREE supporting details for reach reason. • Remember the information from your journals should be used to SUPPORT your reasons. You are NOT persuading administration to go somewhere specific!

  6. SLIDE #1 • Title slide- should include students’ names (FIRST & LAST), Period, and the due date: October 10, 2013. • The next slide is an example.

  7. LET’S GO ON A FIELD TRIP!!! • Completed by: Mary Jones & Elizabeth Smith • Period 3 • October 10, 2013

  8. SLIDE #2 • Introduce the writing situation in a creative way (think about writing a hook!) • The next slide is an example

  9. INTRODUCTION • The students at John H. Walker Middle School read about many things in history textbooks, literature books, science textbooks, and much more. If the seventh grade class was able to go on a field trip, we could experience the concepts taught in these books.

  10. SLIDE #3 • This slide will introduce your first reason. You should use a transition word just like you would if you were writing an essay. • See the following example on the next slide.

  11. REASON #1 • While education is extremely important in any setting, seeing a live version of what we are studying brings all of the ideas written on paper to life.

  12. SLIDE #4 • In this slide, you will support your reason with THREE supporting details. • See the following example on the next slide.

  13. AN EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE • All students learn in many different ways. Some students like to read and learn, others need to have something physical to look at to truly understand the concept. This field trip could help all types of learners because of the educational experiences it could provide. • For example, if we went to New York City, we would be exposed to a great deal of places that are oozing with educational value. Some of those place would be The Museum of Natural History and Ellis Island. • If we went to Boston, Massachusetts, we would be able to see exactly where the Salem witch trials were held and get a more in-depth, first hand experience of what it was like back in that time.

  14. SLIDES 5-8 • These slides will follow the same format as slides four and five. (Obviously with different reasons and supporting details!)

  15. SLIDE #9 • Your final slide (it may not be exactly slide nine if you add more slides in your presentation) will conclude your presentation. • Be certain to leave your audience seriously thinking about your proposal. • See the following example on the next slide.

  16. CONCLUSION • While it is understood that there may be some issues with putting together a class field trip, it will be worth all the effort when students walk away from the experience with more knowledge than what they left with. Let us think about the students and what they truly need to enhance their time at John H. Walker Middle School.

  17. PRESENTATION/GRADING • All students will have FIVE days to complete this presentation. If after this time your work isn’t finished, you and your partner must finish it on your own! • Pairs will begin to present Thursday, October 10, 2013 and continue on Wednesday, October 16, 2013. • All presentations will be graded according to the rubric given in class. If you follow the rubric and stay in the “Above Average” category, you will succeed. Remember this is a TEST grade!!

  18. What Will Make You Above Average? • There are many ways you can enhance your presentation. You may use any of the following: • Figurative Language (similes, metaphors, imagery) • Allusions- a reference to something outside of the text. • Strong vocabulary • Pictures • Custom Animation • Colors and Designs • Hyperlinks to videos and WebPages.

  19. PREPARATION • Be certain you and your partner prepare for your presentation: Print out two copies of the PowerPoint and write down notes for yourselves. • Who will present each slide • Additional informational you would like to add. • Anything else that you want done during the presentation. You may use these notes during the presentation, but you must PRACTICE before the day it is due. • If you finish in the library earlier than other students, this is when you should plan out your presentation. (Presentation is a category in the rubric!!)

  20. REMEMBER… • The teachers in the library are here to help you, but you MUST ask! • If there are any problems you must let Mrs. Minervini know BEFORE the due date! After the due date there is not much that can be done!
