  1. Personalisation: can we stop the solution becoming the problem? Jill Manthorpe Social Care Workforce Research Unit King’s College London

  2. What this is NOT about • Long term care funding • Not pensions • Not NHS • Not eligibility • Not everything else

  3. You don’t know who is coming today? I can’t get the help when I need it They don’t do some things that I need It’s a bit take it or leave it It’s not worth the money I pay It’s brilliant At least they will turn up What have older people said about council home care?

  4. Narrowly defining personalisation • Money worked out on the basis of need • Can be paid as Direct Payment (into bank) • Or money to care provider • Or Money as a voucher

  5. Building blocks • Let’s spend £100 on care…. • Who would you go to and what would you want ? • Home care angels • Home care amateurs • Next door neighbour but one’s cousin

  6. Three points to ponder • Transformation – remembering others • Decimalisation • Coronation • Air travel

  7. From individual view • Will there be winners and losers in this new system? • What safeguards are in place? • What is there to buy? • What is the best source of information – challenges to local Age UK

  8. From services’ view • Winners and losers? • Decommissioning – closing down • Outsourcing of council services • Price hikes? • New businesses? • More scope to keep and increase custom

  9. Effects on care homes? • More options in the community • Greater agreement on risk • Quicker arrangements out of hospital? • Commitment to personal health budgets.

  10. Paths to transformation • Huge pressure on local councils to meet targets, save money, manage rising numbers, set council tax, etc… • The older vote matters (if it votes)

  11. Co-production of information Involvement in developing menus Challenge – what’s not working, and why Collect stories, statistics & develop expertise. What do I want? And for whom? What can I do? What can my group do? Who agrees with me/us? What’s the best way to persuade those who don’t? How to stop the solution becoming the problem?

  12. Over to you! • Thank you • Jill.manthorpe@kcl.ac.uk
