Either people will go back to their villages, if government supports them or they would leave Kandhamal to other part of India once and for all for survival, added Mr. Nayak who lived in the camp for nine months. We are waiting for the elections to be over to know the outcome, he added.

Even nine months after the Kandhamal carnage, only 633 have been arrested despite 11348 being named in 784 FIRs charged with serious offences like murder and rioting despite Orissa government assuring the Supreme Court in October that “The main accused persons involved in commission or instigation of violence have been arrested irrespective of their religious or political affiliations. Raids are constantly being conducted to arrest the remaining accused persons.”

  9. Such police inaction and immunity raises serious questions about the secular credentials of the nation that prides itself in the fundamental freedom of faith and equality before law under Indian constitution.

  10. Two priest and four Sisters of the Mother Teresa Congregation live in the attacked pastral center. The is still not even cleared of the debris let alone repair even after 16 months of attack.

  13. The officer confirms that Christians are threatened by the Hindu fundamentalist and assures protection for them as long as they are posted there. Also sounded out the fear of being called back at any time.
