Waldo • Waldo was first named Western State Normal School Principle on April 1, 1904 • Four years later he was named Western State Normal School president and served as President until SEPTEMBER 1, 1936 • "He was a man who had all the attributes of a successful businessman and all the qualities of a day dreamer — a realist and an idealist harmoniously blended," according to the WMU historian James O. Knauss. http://www.ur.wmich.edu/centennial/presidents.html

Why The Hilltoppers? • WMU's athletic teams initially went by the nickname "Hilltoppers," reflecting the institution's original Prospect Hill campus. • The nickname became outdated once the school expanded beyond the hilltops confines.
