Traditional Library Services • Collections • Facility • Technology
Collections Various “Special” Collections Book Collections Journals Databases $100,000 funding increase for FY 2014
Steely Library – the “atypical” library Near-research library model TM • Emphasis is on meeting user information needs regardless of physical holdings • ILL and document delivery are freely available at no direct cost to the user • Collections are developed through techniques that more accurately reflect user needs • Flexibility that allows application of special skills and perspectives to traditional and non-traditional initiatives
Collections • “Near Research-Library Experience” • 2001 – circa 1,500 journal subscriptions + limited full-text • 2013 – 47,956 current journal titles (subscriptions + full-text) • Unfettered access is critical • Reduction in ILL requests indicates that users are finding more of the information that they need within our collections.
21st Century Collection Development • Limited resources = need for most effective collection development methods • Increased emphasis on purchase pools • Materials purchased in this manner see higher circulation • Use of electronic books to re-introduce serendipity?
Special Collections and Archives • Accomplishments • Two NEH grants, funding a major project to upgrade environmental and security systems • Significant new collections, including the papers of Northern Kentucky artist Charles McLaughlin, the Theodore Harris Local History Research Papers, additional papers from Della Lewis Jones, an African-American Teacher/Librarian who worked in Northern Kentucky
Facility • Even as electronic access grows, we see increased usage of the building • Aged furniture and changes in student study habits indicate a need for renovation and update • Demonstration Projects • $60,000 has been allocated by the University for a renovation project • Additional funds have been provided to extend hours
Bringing Art Into the Building … • Paul Sawyier Exhibition • $4.5 million of artworks from a variety of collectors • Sponsored by CVG • Regional exposure • Special Thanks to Regent Nathan Smith
