Figures of Speech Similes Metaphors A direct comparison between two things, holding one equal to the other A = B Examples: Juliet is the sun You are my sunshine • A comparison between two things, usually with the words “like” or “as” • A simile is similar or alike • A is like B • Examples: • Your smile is like the sun; it brightens my day. • Your eyes are as bright as the sun.

  3. Try it! • Working alone or with a partner, try answering the problems on the worksheet. ANSWERS: • 1. baby – octopus • 2. class – three-ring circus • 3. steps – thunder • 4. pillow – cloud • 5. I – limp dishrag • 6. girls – peas in a pod • 7. light – sun • 8. he (Harold) – wet blanket • 9. bar of soap – slippery eel • 10. Ted - cat

Your turn! • Working with a partner or in a small group, construct a song, poem, or short story using at least 10 metaphors and 10 similes • All content must be classroom appropriate • You will present your song, poem, or short story to the class tomorrow. If you need more time, you will have it at the beginning of the hour tomorrow to tie up loose ends.
