Algebra I – Chapter 4

Algebra I – Chapter 4. 4.2 Adding and Subtracting Polynomials. Adding Polynomials. In order to add polynomials, we need to combine like terms. Ex: (2x – 5y + 2) + (5x + 6y – 7). Let’s try together:. (2x 2 y – 3xy 2 – y 3 ) + (2x 2 y – xy 2 ). Subtracting Polynomials.

  1. Algebra I – Chapter 4 4.2 Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

  2. Adding Polynomials • In order to add polynomials, we need to combine like terms. • Ex: (2x – 5y + 2) + (5x + 6y – 7)

  3. Let’s try together: • (2x2y – 3xy2 – y3) + (2x2y – xy2)

  4. Subtracting Polynomials • When you see subtraction, you can either add the opposite, or just distribute the negative one. • Ex: (a – 3b +5) – (-a + 2b + 3)

  5. You try: • (3a3 – 2ab2) – (a3 – 4ab2 – b3)

  6. Putting it all together and solving: • 3 – 2x(x – 1) = x(3 – 2x) – (x – 3)

  7. Tonight’s Homework: Page 149 (31-55 odd)
