The first people in Australia • The Aborigines were the only people in Australia for 40,000 years. • They lived all over the continent. • They never became farmers because they lived on wild plants and animals.
End of a peaceful life • In 1770 Captain James Cook took possession of Australia in the name of Great Britain. • There were about one million Aborigines at that time. • The British settlers arrived in 1788.
In 1788 there were about one million Aborigines. In 1902 there were only a hundred thousand ( 100.000 ) Aborigines left !! They were living in reserves or camps. They lost their land
Civil rights movement • In 1960, a Civil Rights movement started. • In 1967 the Aborigines got the right to vote.
