The challenge • Based on the Battleships pencil & paper game • Racers are “powered” by a Java method to clear all ships in a 3x3 grid (one hit sinks) • Need to balance accuracy Vs efficiency • Racers advance only if all ships hit • Move faster if fewer shots taken • Grids are generated randomly • Each has 1 battleship, 1 destroyer, 2 patrol boats • All 216 possible grids are equally likely
The rewards • Two prizes available • 1st prize reserved for best student entry • 2nd prize open to all competitors (inc staff) • Main race for 1st prize (unless staff wins) • Second race for the remaining prize • Tie-breaker races as needed
