  6. General Education • IGETC ( 37 Semester Units) • Statutory requirements in Government and US History not Double Counted • CSU Breadth (39 Semester Units) • Statutory requirements usually double counted in area D. • Science lab (B3) associated with science class B1 or B2 allocated 0 units.

  9. EXAMPLE • Discipline A has few LD requirements and room for free electives. • Their agreement is 39 units of GE + 6 units of free electives.

EXAMPLE • Discipline B wants a specific pattern of GE ,believing that the purpose of GE is to gain breadth, and certain major courses (6 units) outside of GE • Their agreement is: Any courses that satisfy GE except area D. In area D choose classes that are outside the discipline. In addition take Intro A and Intro B.

  11. EXAMPLE • Discipline C has a structured program that usually involves double counting. • Their agreement is: Complete areas A and B. In C1 choose either X or Y. In area D choose anything but Z. X or Y also satisfy a major requirement. Also take major course 1 and major course 2.

EXAMPLE • Discipline D usually specifies a particular class in area D of GE, however not all campuses agree on what that class should be. • Their agreement is: Complete GE (any pattern) except for area D.(36 units) Complete major course 1 and major course 2 and major course 3 (or one free elective) (9 units). In each campus’ 15 units, completion of area D is specified.

  13. CAN Descriptors • CAN Identifier – The current CAN prefix and number (e.g., CAN ANTH 2). If the course is new, a CAN Identifier will not be included. • CAN Title - The current CAN course title (e.g., “Introduction to Physical/Biological Anthropology”). If the course is new, a CAN Title should be recommended.

  14. Minimum Units – Minimum number of units allowable for qualified courses by term, both semester and quarter. • Prerequisites and/or co-requisites –Courses required before attempting the course or required while attempting the course. • Current CAN Descriptor – The current CAN descriptor.

  15. Proposed CAN Descriptor - The new CAN descriptor proposed by the LDTP, including: Overview Topics/Content It is strongly recommended that the descriptor also contain course objectives.

  16. The Agreement The list of courses agreed to as part of the 45 or more system transfer core. Where specific courses are required (Intro to Chemistry) as opposed to generic courses (any class satisfying GE area B1) these courses should have attached a proposed CAN descriptor. The CAN descriptors may be developed outside of the meeting or may be the subject of a second meeting.

Integrated Teacher Programs • GE Certification Pattern: • A.1 Oral Communication: A certified A.1 Course, Public Speaking Preferred • A.2 Written Communication: A certified A.2 Course • A.3 Critical Thinking: A certified A.3 Course • B.1 Physical Science: Survey of Chemistry & Physics) AND Survey of Earth Science • B.2 Life Science: Introduction to Biology • B.3 A lab associated with a B.1 or B.2 course • B.4 Mathematics: CAN MATH 4 or equivalent, Math for Elementary Teachers • C.1 Art: A survey of art, music, dance or theatre; or, a C.1 course that combines 2 or more areas • C.2 Humanities: Survey of literature course with either a cultural or geographic scope; must cover multiple genres Additional C.2 or D course: CAN HIST 14 or equivalent • Area D Courses: U.S. History: CAN HIST 8 or equivalent Government: U.S. Government CAN GOV 2 or equivalent World Geography • Area D or E: CAN FCS 14* or equivalent • Outside of GE Introduction to Education**

  22. Chemistry • Complete lower division general education. Having done this, obtain certification of completion of IGETC or General Education-Breadth. Physics and Calculus should be taken as part of GE • Complete the graduation requirements in United States History, Constitution and American Ideals. These are typically completed with one course each in American government and American history, or a sequence of courses that integrate the history and government topics. Where possible this should be double counted in GE. • Complete with grade of C or better a a calculus based Physics class that counts in GE [CAN PHYS 8]Complete with grade of C or better Calculus [ Can MATH 18]These courses should be double counted in GE. • One year of General Chemistry for Science Majors [CAN CHEM SEQ A]. It is recommended that course sequences be completed at a single institution.

  23. ART • Complete lower division general education. Having done this, obtaincertification of completion of IGETC or General Education-Breadth.This may include completion of Survey of Art History [CAN ART 2 or 4] in Area C2 of the CSU GE-Breadth pattern, or Area 3B of IGETC. • Complete the graduation requirements in United States History, Constitution and American Ideals. These are typically completed with one course each in American government and American history, or a sequence of courses that integrate the history and government topics. Where possible these should be double counted in GE. • Complete Survey of Art History from Prehistoric through Medieval Periods* [CAN Art 2] or Survey of Art History from Renaissance to the Present* [CAN Art 4]It not already completed as part of GE. • Complete Beginning Drawing*# [Can ART 8]AND • Complete Two-Dimensional Design *# [CAN ART 14] * For these courses, a grade of C or better is required # At some CSU campuses, these courses are used only as free electives towards the baccalaureate.

  24. Asian-American Studies • Complete lower division general education. Having done this, obtaincertification of completion of IGETC or General Education-Breadth This may include completion of History of Asian Americans [CAN designation to be determined] in Area D of the CSU GE-Breadth pattern, or Area 4 of IGETC.. • Complete the graduation Requirements in United States History, Constitution and American Ideals.These are typically completed with one course each in American government and American history, or a sequence of courses that integrate the history and government topics. If possible these should be double counted in GE. • If not already completed as a part of lower-division general education: Complete History of Asian Americans [CAN none as yet] • If required to achieve a sum of no fewer than 45 semester units:Complete one or more other courses that carry transferable credit toward the CSU baccalaureate degree.

  25. Psychology • Complete lower division general education. Having done this, obtaincertification of completion of IGETC or General Education-Breadth.This may include completion of Introduction to Psychology [CAN PSY 2] in Area D of the CSU GE-Breadth pattern, or Area 4 of IGETC. • Complete the graduation requirements in United States History, Constitution This can be done taking courses that count in GE. • If not already completed as a part of lower-division general education:Complete Introduction to Psychology [CAN PSY 2] • If required to achieve a sum of no fewer than 45 semester units: Complete a second CSU-transferable course in English composition; AND / ORComplete Psychological Statistics [CAN PSY 6]; AND / ORComplete any other courses that carry transferable credit toward the CSU baccalaureate degree.

  26. ENGLISH Community college students who plan to major in English must • (1) complete lower-division general education requirements by following either the Inter segmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) pattern or the CSU General Education-Breadth pattern. Most CSU-bound transfer students choose the General Education-Breadth pattern. Students must also • (2) fulfill the graduation requirements in United States History, Constitution, and American Ideals. Students seeking to complete the Lower Division Transfer Pattern for the major in English must • (3) complete additional courses transferable to the CSU as lower-division coursework to reach a total of 45 semester units. In addition students must • (4) complete 15 units as specified by the English Department at the CSU campus that they will attend to bring the total to 60 transferable semester units.

  27. Electrical Engineering • Complete one course from area A1 (1C IGETC) • Complete one course from area A2 (1A IGETC) • Complete two course from Area C ( 3 IGETC) • Complete the graduation requirements in United States History, Constitution and American Ideals. Complete a third class to satisfy area D (area 4) These are typically completed with one course each in American government and American history, or a sequence of courses that integrate the history and government topics. • Complete CAN Math Sequence C. The first course should be counted for B4 (Area 2 for IGETC) • Complete Physics PHYS 8 & PHYS 12 A lab should be included with one of these to satisfy B1 & B3 (5A IGETC) • Complete a programming course [CAN: CSCI 22] • Complete Circuits [CAN: ECE 6] This pattern leaves 12 units of GE Breadth uncovered: 3 units in A, 3 units in B, 3 units in C, 3 units in E. This pattern leaves 9 units of IGETC uncovered: 3 in area 1, 3 in area 5, and 3 in area 3..
