On-Line Cutting of LOVA Nitramine Gun Propellant Wayne Thomas William Newton Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division
Cutter Design History • We had to design a method of cutting LOVA strands remotely for the twin screw extruder. • The manual method of cutting strands is not applicable. • This strand cutting method is a very innovative technology in the continuous processing of LOVA propellant.
MANUAL FEED CUTTER • This cutter uses a rotating blade against a brass block. • This technology is approximately 60 years old. • This used for various formulations.
ON LINE CUTTER • The basic premise of this cutter is to replace the person in the “Manual Feed Cutter”. • The strand is cut using a blade rotating past a brass block.
CAPABILITIES OF THE ON LINE CUTTER • The cutter can cut strands from 0.25” to 0.75” in diameter. • The cutter can handle strand linear speed rates up to 50 ipm at maximum diameter. • The cuts are more uniform because the strand is indexed, stopped and then cut. • This is possible because the strand handling and cutting is handled by computer controlled motors. • At our new 88mm extruder we will be cutting 8 strands.
