What is Domestic Violence • A pattern of abusive behaviors by one of both partners in an intimate relationship. • Intimate relationship: Marriage, dating, family, friends or cohabitation. • Forms: Physical aggression(hitting, kicking, biting, shoving, restraining, throwing) or threats of; sexual abuse; emotional abuse; controlling; intimidation; stalking; neglect; or even economic deprivation. • Alcohol and mental health have been associated with abusive behaviors.

  4. History • Domestic violence didn’t become an issue socially until the 19th century. • First use of the expression ‘Domestic Violence’ was in 1977. • 1978-1984 various bills against DV were presented but never passed • In 1984 the bill “The Family Violence Prevention Services Act” was passed.

History (cont'd) • In 1994, Congress, enacted legislation empowering the federal government to participate in the fight against domestic violence. • 1996: Congress reaffirmed its commitment to fight domestic violence crimes. • Fun fact: Most domestic violence laws are geared towards protecting women over men.

Statistics • Estimates: • 248 of every 1,000 women • 76 of every 1,000 men • Are victims of physical assault and/or rape committed by their spouses. • A 1997 report shows that significantly more men than women do not disclose the identity of their attacker. • A 2009 study showed there was a greater acceptance for abuse perpetrated by females than by males. • 1999: 1,218 women and 424 men were killed by an intimate partner, by 2005 these numbers only decreased to 1,181 females and 329 males.
