TERENA Compendium 2005:Summary of key findings Bert van Pinxteren TERENA http://www.terena.nl/compendium GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
New in 2005: aggregations • EU-15 + EFTA: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK • New EU member states: Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia • Non-EU/EFTA GN2 partners: Croatia, Bulgaria, Israel, Russia, Romania, Turkey GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Summary of key findings: • Legal form • Users/clients • Network • Traffic • Services • Funding • Bonus material! GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Legal form (1) • In the EU-15/EFTA countries, the most common (but not the only) model is the NREN which is a separate legal entity, controlled by the research and education community • In other areas, there is greater diversity GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Legal form (2) • Conclusion: NREN development requires the commitment of all major stakeholders, such as funders and users. A governing model that allows the participation of these stakeholders would seem to be the most appropriate; such a situation can be achieved in a number of different ways. GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Users/clients (1) • Gb connections of Universities GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Users/clients (2) • Gigabit Ethernet is being introduced by many hitherto less developed NRENs (such as AMREJ, MARNET and RENAM) and thus seems to make it possible, for the first time, to quickly address an importantaspect of (…) the ‘digital divide’ in Europe (…). GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Network (1) • Dark fibre on NREN backbones GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Network (2) • There are indications that more and more NRENs are switching over to dark fibre as the technology of the future, with the EU NRENs being in the lead • The trend seems to be that in the more advanced countries, the core capacity will evolve to 10 Gb/s or multiples of that. GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Traffic (1) • Growth rates in the new EU member states and in non-EU/EFTA countries are clearly higher than those in the ‘old’ EU member states • It seems that in the EU, traffic growth is slowing down GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Traffic (2) • It seems that traffic is now determined more by (changes in) user demand, rather than by network capacity limitations. • It is unclear if this trend towards slower growth will persist • The longer-established NRENs from the EU and EFTA countries are mostly net exporters of data, while the other NRENs are net importers. GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Traffic (3): congestion index GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Services • Increased need for AAI • Grid services are currently running in 15 out of the 27 EU/EFTA NRENs in the survey and in 5 out of the 16 NRENs from other countries in the survey • More NRENs planning to introduce such a service • NREN support is needed for running the service in the great majority of cases GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Funding • Comparisons are difficult (almost impossible) • The trend is that budgets stay relatively stable and that NRENs are able to deliver more bandwidth and more services for roughly the same amount of money. • EU projects seem to act as a catalyst for increased national NREN budgets in some countries GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005

Bonus material • Compendium 2005 - spreadsheets • home :: compendium :: 2005 :: spreadsheetsThese spreadsheets are posted here as an experimental service only for the NRENs that have participated in the survey. They can be used for example for preparing national reports that contain data from a subset of NRENs that is relevant for your national situation. Recognising TERENA as the source of the data will be appreciated. Note that most of the data have been collected in March and April of 2005. If you find new, nice ways of presenting the data, please feel free to share your insights with us.It may take some studying to figure out what is what in the spreadsheets - but if you have trouble with them, you can always ask for clarification. All spreadsheets have a column with the name of the NREN and the country. Most of them also have some way of sorting the countries geographically, as in the Compendium. E.g. and 'a' might be used for EU countries, a 'b' for other countries. Note that these distinctions have not been used consistently throughout the spreadsheets. • Basic information • Legal form of NRENs, partner organisations - 6.19_6.20_organisation_info.xls • Users / clients • Connection policies, percentages of institutions in different categories served by the NREN - Ch._2.8_inst_connect_marketshare_graphs.xls • Uptake of IPv6 - ipv6_unis_research_1.5_1.7.xls • Numbers of connected institutions and bandwidth - 1.5_inst_conn_speeds.xls • Network • Core capacity - Ch.3.2_Core Capacity00-07l.xls • Core network size - Ch.3.4_Core Network Size multiyear.xls • External links - Ch.3.5_external_links.xls • Dark fibre - Ch.3.7_darkfibre.xls • Traffic • External traffic ('T3' and 'T4')- Ch.4.2_traffic_t3_t4_multiyear.xls • Traffic load - Ch.4_links_load_for_final.xls • Congestion - 3.5_congestion.xls • Services - 5.3_5.4_5.6_5.7_services.xls • Tasks, Staffing, Funding - 4_funding_staffing.xls • Appendix • Number of PoPs and of managed links on the network - 2.1_2.2_network.xls • Traffic with the general Internet - external_traffic_3.3_3.4.xls (use columns D and E) GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
Wise Words • Check and double-check your data! GA 24, Budapest, 21 October 2005
