What Warrior Football Stands for • COMPETITION at every level. • CONSISTENCY in our approach to instruction. • CLEARCOMMUNICATION with all the major stakeholders. • COMMITMENT to always having the players’ EFFORT exceed their ABILITY.
What Warrior Football Stands for • Goal: Get all ninth graders in every game. INVOLVEMENT • Goal: Have JV players get experience that prepares them for the demands of varsity. GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT • Goal: Recognize the varsity players who have committed to the program both on and off the field. EXCELLENCE in EXECUTION BETTER ATHLETES NOT BITTER ATHLETES
What Warrior Football Will Not Stand For: • Poor communication. • Disrespect towards staff or players. • Inappropriate requests for playing time. • Academic ineligibility. • Violation of the substance use policy.
Seniors and Recruiting • TRANSCRIPT – The FIRST thing a coach will look at to weigh viability in admissions. • TEST SCORES – ACT/SAT • NCAA Clearinghouse—www.ncaaclearinghouse.net • We encourage college coaches to visit MHS between the hours of 11AM and 12:30PM. This is during the lunch/reading blocks so classes are NOT interrupted. • We are updating our ALUMNI LIST & COLLEGE FOOTBALL CONTACT LIST. • Tuesday June 24th at 3PM seniors will update HUDL accounts and PreRegister for NE 7v7.
Seniors and Recruiting • If your son expresses an interest in playing at the DI II or III level, understand how much the expectation level increases. • The demands of college football are year-round—this dictates and limits certain opportunities for all student-athletes. Please understand that no coach is offended if a student decides to not play college football.
Seniors and Recruiting • There is no such thing as a “verbal” commitment to a school. You are committing to a coach NOT a school. Admissibility v. Eligibility. • If you plan on a PG year colleges want to see that you are progressing, not just repeating. • Parents are recruited as well. Coaches come to games to see kids and watch parents in the stands.
Class of 2014: Clemson x 2 U South Carolina Ithaca Elon Miami of Ohio WPI Northeastern Purdue Wentworth Providence Babson
In-Season Schedule • Monday Varsity: Walkthrough/Condition/Film JV: GAME Frosh: Co-Practice w/ 8th Grade or varsity • Tuesday—Wednesday Varsity/JV/FROSH: Full Pads Practice • Thursday Varsity/JV: Full Pads Walkthrough FROSH: GAME • Friday Varsity/JV: GAME FROSH: Walkthrough/Condition • Saturday Varsity: Conditioning/Stretch/Film JV: Walkthrough FROSH: No weekend commitments • Sunday NO FOOTBALL COMMITMENTS. REST & RECUPERATE. **Once we are in season, practice times run from 3-5:30/6PM**
Schedule Suggestions • Please make every effort to plan dentist, doctor, college appointments around these times. This is only a request. • We will practice on non-school, non-religious holiday dates. This is to ensure that we are prepared for Friday’s game. (i.e., Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Columbus Day). • Communication is a partnership. If your child is injured in a game, is ill, or has a family commitment please call or email a staff member (coach, trainer, nurse, dean of students, main office).
Schedule Suggestions Part II • Academic commitments are paramount. Students should attend extra-help sessions, as needed. Our preference is that they meet with teachers before school or immediately after. • “I have to go to football,” is NEVER an excuse a teacher should hear. Players need to bring a note to practice after their help sessions. • Please be aware of the BONA FIDE TEAM RULE. If your son misses a football practice or game to play in a travel or select team outside of MHS it is a 2-week suspension and your child cannot play in any tournament games.
Playing Time • We want our practices to be MORE competitive than the games. • If a player thinks they are not getting a fair, appropriate assessment in regard to playing time, direct them to their position coach. • Second stringers need to perform consistently AT or ABOVE the level of the first-stringer in order to get on the field consistently. • The best places to make an impact are on scout teams and special teams.
Playing Time Part II • If your child has communicated with the position coach and feels as though they are not getting a fair, appropriate assessment as to their playing time I will meet with the player and parent. • Please do not send an email that begins: “My son doesn’t know I am contacting you but…”
Team Dinners & Social Obligations • Team Dinners exist to promote team unity. • We want all players to embrace the mentality of these dinners when they go out with friends on Friday or Saturday nights. • Making good decisions outside of school, home and the field is how a program forms a reputation.
Summer Commitments • BAY STATE FOOTBALL CAMP: --Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday AM August 14th, 15th & 16th. --Held at turf fields in Needham --RISING 10th-12th graders only. Helmets & Shoulder pads only. • Free Wednesday Clinics (July 9th-August 13th) Open to all ages. Great place to learn the basics of football, run through football specific drills. We run this with Millis, D/S & Sharon. Held at MHS Turf. Wednesdays 6pm—8pm. As a staff we feel Gut Camp, Bay State Camp and Wednesdays are the most important camps to attend.
TENTATIVE SCHEDULE • July 7th: Weight room access 5:15-8:15pm Monday--Thursday. • July 7th: Gut Camp Begins, 6:15AM • July 9th: First Wednesday clinic 6PM on MHS Turf. • July 20th: NE 7v7 Passing Competition at Oliver Ames HS(11th & 12th only) • July 21st-24th: Jr. Warrior Football Academy • August 14th-16th: Bay State Camp • August 18th: First day of practice (Time is TBA) • August 23rd: Co-Practice/Scrimmage at Ashland 9AM • August 26th: Scrimmage @ Belmont 6pm • August 29th: Scrimmage v. Millis 6pm • September 1st: Labor Day practice 4PM **You will receive email updates on changes**
CONDITIONING TEST • At the start of the preseason all players will run TEN 40-yard dashes in five minutes. • Failure to pass this test will result in extra conditioning practices during preseason. • Players will be informed of their expected time completions. • We will also test players in BENCH, SQUAT, CLEANS, CHIN UPS & DIPS. RISING NINTH GRADERS WILL NOT BE TESTED IN THE WEIGHT ROOM. THEY WILL BE EXPECTED TO PERFORM THE RUNNING TEST. ***If a player isn’t physically prepared for the rigors of preseason we will not allow them on the field.***
