TYPOGRAPHY TOPIC 3.0
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOME • Apply efficiently design principles to design publishing materials by using desktop publishing software and hardware to create a variety of publishing materials • Use suitable equipment and software to produce the right printing output • Produce advertising and marketing product to develop skills and knowledge by using appropriate software
LESSON LEARNING OUTCOME (LLO) • Understand typography. • Define typography. • Identify typographical / typesetting conventions
OUR DISCUSSION TODAY IS • Understand typography. • Define typography.
OUR DISCUSSION TODAY IS • Identify typographical / typesetting conventions: • spacing • quotation marks • ligatures • hyphenation • font versions • small caps • typefaces • white space • widows and orphans
Define typography • Typography(from the Greek words τύπος (typos) = form and γραφή (graphe) = writing) • is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make language visible. • The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing), adjusting the spaces between groups of letters (tracking) and adjusting the space between pairs of letters (kerning).
Define typography • In modern times, typography has been put into motion—in film, television and online broadcasts—to add emotion to mass communication. • Typography is performed by typesetters, compositors, typographers, graphic designers, art directors, comic book artists, graffiti artists, clerical workers, and anyone else who arranges type for a product.
Define typography • Until the Digital Age, typography was a specialized occupation. • Digitization opened up typography to new generations of visual designers and lay users, and David Jury states that "typography is now something everybody does."
typographical / typesetting conventions: • spacing • quotation marks • ligatures • hyphenation • font versions • small caps • typefaces • white space • widows and orphans
spacing • In typography, leadingrefers to the distance between the baselines of successive lines of type. • In consumer-oriented word processing software, this concept is usually referred to as "line spacing" or "interline spacing."
quotation marks • In English writing, quotation marks or inverted commas (informally referred to as quotes or speech marks)are punctuation marks surrounding a quotation, direct speech, or a literal title or name.
ligatures • In writing and typography, a ligature occurs where two or more graphemes or letters are joined as a single glyph
hyphenation • The hyphen (‐) is a punctuation mark used to join words and to separate syllables of a single word. The use of hyphens is called hyphenation. A man-eating shark A man eating shark
hyphenation • A man-eating shark is a shark that eats humans. • A man eating shark is a man who is eating shark meat.
font versions • Font versions provide options for the content and size of font files that can be included on your platform. The font files are available in both compressed and non-compressed formats.
small caps • In typography, small capitals (usually abbreviated small caps) are uppercase (capital) characters set at the same height and weight as surrounding lowercase (small) letters or text figures.
typefaces • In typography, a typeface (also known as font family) is a set of one or more fonts each composed of glyphs that share common design features. • e.g. "ITC Garamond Bold Condensed Italic" is a different font from "ITC Garamond Condensed Italic" and "ITC Garamond Bold Condensed," but all are fonts within the same typeface, "ITC Garamond."

white space • In page layout, illustration and sculpture, white space is often referred to as negative space. It is the portion of a page left unmarked
widows and orphans • In typesetting, widows and orphans are words or short lines at the beginning or end of a paragraph, which are left dangling at the top or bottom of a column, separated from the rest of the paragraph.
widows and orphans • A common mnemonic is "An orphan has no past; a widow has no future"or"An orphan is left behind, whereas a widow must go on alone"
