Completing Chapter 1 Chart-- Rationalists Beliefs * people were good (Deism) * arrive at truth by using reason rather than relying on authority of the past and the church * God created the universe but did not interfere in its workings; humans use brains to figure things out * best form of worship was to be good to others

Final Illustrations and Passages Chapter 1 (P4, 5, and 6 today; P2 will do it on Monday; P6 just started setting up chart) • Place the title of the group at top of each column • Write down an important passage from one of the stories/selections for a particular group and explain why it is a good example of what that group believes and the type of literature they write. Include the page number • Draw an image that relates to the group you are writing about and explain why the image relates
Sample of what you could put on the Illustration Chart Native Americans • “…she hurled herself through the sky down toward the water…” (page 6) This shows Native Americans used stories to explain how important natural things happened (like the earth forming); it also shows that women were important • Picture This picture relates to the Native Americans because it shows… (it DOES NOT have to be a picture from the selection you used for the quote; it can be a visual that helps you remember what was important to this group and why they wrote)
