East Coast Music Association • The E.C.M.A’s is a group of people in the music industry from all over the Atlantic Provinces. • East Coast Music Association and the East Coast Music Awards are one in the same. • The first E.C.M.A’s began in 1989 by Rob Cohn, and was held in Halifax. At that time it was known as the Maritime Music Awards.
The First E.C.M.A’s • There were only five categories that first year: • Album of the Year • Female Artist of the Year • Male Artist of the Year • Song of the Year • Video of the Year It now has grown to over 25 categories
In 1991, Cohn joined forces with people from all over the Atlantic provinces and turned the Maritime Music Awards into the East Coast Music Awards. • The awards now include artists from; • Nova Scotia • New Brunswick • P.E.I • Nfld and Labrador • Cape Breton
Increased Awareness: • The E.C.M.A’s are aired every year on CBC; in a two hour national broadcast. • The E.C.M.A’s have helped promote Atlantic Canadian artists not only to the rest of Canada, but also the world. • People all around the world are invited each year to the E.C.M.A’s which also helps to promote Atlantic Canadian music.

The Event Today: • The E.C.M.A’s went from being a one day event held in a Halifax bar to being a five day international celebration. • The E.C.M.A’s have grown so much they are now considered to be as large and as significant as the Juno’s and The Canadian Country Music Awards. • The 2013 award ceremonies marked the 25 anniversary of the awards, and was held in Halifax once again.
