What is Management? • Defined as “ the attainment of organisational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, organising, leading and controlling organisational resources”
Functions of Management (Fayol) Four Management Functions: Planning Organizing Leading Controlling
The Management Functions • Planning – defining goals for future organisational performance and deciding on the tasks and use of resources needed to attain them • Organising – involves assigning tasks, responsibility, delegating authority and allocating resources across organisation
The Management Functions • Leading – involve the use of influence to motivate employees to achieve the organisation’s goals • Controlling – concerned with monitoring employees’ activities, keeping the organisation on track toward its goals and making corrections as needed

Types of Managers First-Line Supervisors Manage the work of employees who are involved in the actual production or creation of an organization’s products or services. Middle Managers Manage first-line managers and others. Top Managers Have organization-wide managerial responsibilities—Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Vice-Presidents, and Board Chairs
