Chapter 6 Vocabulary • Indulgently – “But once a year, they all smiled indulgently at the commotion from the little ones waiting to receive names and families.” (pg 42) • Indulgent: (adj) permissive • Infringed – “But each such error reflected negatively on his parents guidance and infringed on the community’s sense of order and success.” (pg 45) • Infringe: (verb) to commit a breach or infraction of • Scrupulously – “…the Assignments were scrupulously thought through by the Committee of the Elders.” (48) • Scrupulous: (adj) having or showing a strict regard for what one considers right; principled

  3. Chapter 6 Activities • Class Discussion/Question about the chapter… • After discussion, assign three questions for chapter 6 within your group. Do not start on the questions, simply assign the questions (5 minutes). • Respond to the Journal Prompt 4 for Chapter 6: • Reread the paragraph on the Matching of the Spouses (pg 48). Think of your own family and families around you or that you see on TV. Why might the Community have adopted this policy? Do you see any good in this policy? Explain why or why not. • ** Look at your rubric so you know how I will grade this response.

Chapter 7 Vocabulary • Meticulously – “ Finally the chief elder paid tribute to the hard work of the committee, which had performed the observations so meticulously all year.” (pg 52) • Meticulous: (adj) taking or showing extreme care about minute details; precise thorough • Ruefully – “Asher nodded ruefully and the audience chuckled aloud.” (pg 54). • Rueful: (adj) feeling, showing or expressing sorrow or pity

  5. Chapter 7 Activities • Make a detailed prediction about what you think will happen next. Use evidence from the text (I think _____ will happen because _____ said/did, etc ______. I see evidence on page ___ to support my prediction. • Class Discussion/Question about the chapter… • After discussion, assign three questions for chapter 7 within your group. • Begin answering questions for chapter 6 & 7. • Discuss answers as a class, time permitting.
