Background • The exploration of space between the United States and the Soviet Union began the impact of science and technology.

Exploring the Solar System and BeyondCooperation in Space • The US and Soviet programs began to work together to achieve the docking of their spacecraft's in orbit. • Achieved on July 17th, 1975 • Soyuz 28 was the first to send an international crew into space • Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Canada, Italy, Japan, Israel, and Mexico. • International Space Station: Cooperative venture sponsored by the US, Russia, and 14 other nations to establish and maintain a working laboratory for scientific experimentation in space. ISS:
Exploring the Universe • Hubble Space Telescope: observes and sends back images of objects in the most remote region of the universe • Unmanned space probes • Venera-1970’s • Magellan-1990’s • Voyager 2- 1977 • Pathfinder- 1977 Hubble Space telescope:
Expanding Global CommunicationsSmaller, More Powerful Computers • 1940- When computers first came into use • Smaller more powerful computers are because of the space program (equipment had to be downsized to fit into small space capsules)
Communications Networks • Internet- a linkage of computer networks that enables people around the world to exchange information and communicate with one another. • It transmits information electronically to remote locations and paved the way for home offices and telecommuting • Telecommuting: working at home using a computer to a business network
Transforming Human LifeHealth and Medicine • Advances in medical imaging also helped to improve health care • Genetic engineering: the transferring of genes from one living thing to another in order to produce an organism with new traits • Cloning: the creation of plants or animals that are genetically identical to an existing plant or animal
The Green Revolution • Green Revolution: a 20th Century attempt to increase food resources worldwide, involving the use of fertilizers and pesticides and the development of disease-resistance crops. • Negative side of green revolution • Fertilizers and pesticides often contain dangerous chemicals • The cost of the chemicals and the equipment to harvest more crops was far too expensive • Owners of small farms received little benefit from the advances in agriculture
