WHY?? For Teachers
Why is Science Fair important? • Opportunity to DO science • Interest in integrated study and research • Strengthen skills • Use of inquiry-based scientific process • Learning opportunities across many subjects • Community connections • Educational opportunities beyond school • Global competitiveness and exposure
Parts of a STEM Project science, technology, engineering & math • Question (related to Purpose / Problem) • Research Plan • Hypothesis • Materials • Procedure (includes Variables) • Data / Results • Conclusion • Works Cited
Identifying a SMART Question A good Research Plan Format to follow: • S–specific focus • M–measureable (collect data – NOT opinions) • A–attainable materials (easy to find) • R– realistic investigation (NOT a report, demonstration, or model) • T– timely (the effect of one thing upon another)
Generating STEM Ideas • What materials are easy to find for conducting experiments on ---? • How do / does --- act? • How can I change the set of --- materials to affect the way --- act(s)? (independent variable) • How can I measure or describe the response of --- to the change I made? (dependent variable)
Who Can Participate? • Any student in grades six through twelve with an interest in science and/or engineering and enrolled in a public, private, or parochial school in the parishes of Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, or St. Bernard is eligible to enter the Fair by following the process established at his/her school. Each school determines which students will represent it at the Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair. • In order to send students to the fair, eligible schools MUST affiliate with the Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair by returning the affiliation form. Located at GNO website.
More help in the fall for Teachers! • GNOSEF Workshop – Saturday, September 7, 2013 • This year's workshop will be held in a computer lab where attendees will have the opportunity to assess mock projects, complete online fillable forms, and upload them to box.com – our new digital system for simplifying the paperwork process. We’ve had very positive feedback from teachers who beta-tested it this year, so we are excited about the possibilities.
Your School Science Fair • Conduct your school/class science fair and select the top three projects in each category by January 10, 2014. Junior Division Categories: • Biological Science • Chemistry • Earth Science • Engineering • Environmental Science • Math & Computers • Physics
