Ch. 2 Notes Biotechnology
Pathogen- An agent that causes disease. • Epidemiology- study of how diseases spread • Vaccination- procedure that allows people to resist infection.
Genetics- study of heredity and how traits are passed. • Genome- complete set of genetic information for any organism. • Genetic Engineering- Genetic material of an organism is changed.
Biometrics Def: The use of biological traits to determine a person’s identity. -Examples on p.36 • Iris patterns • Fingerprints • Hair samples (DNA samples) • Brain waves • Speech patterns
Nanotechnology Def: Creating products by changing individual atoms or molecules. Ex. p. 34 Controlling the rate a drug is release by coating it with atoms of another compound.
Biomolecular Materials Def: Inventions based on natural organic compounds. Ex. p. 35 -Ceramics based on how clams make shell -Glue based on adhesive used by bacteria -Artificial spider silk to make light, strong fabric
Biomimetics Def: Using biological processes and systems to solve design and engineering problems. Ex. p. 35 -hook and loop fasteners (Velcro), modeled after cockle burrs. -submarine modeled after swim bladder of fish
Adapting Tools & Methods Def: Using tools and methods, developed for one purpose, for another. Ex. p. 35 CAT scan was developed for doctors to make detailed images of internal organs. Is now also used to create models of fossils and living organisms.
