Eating Styles • Toddler’s appetite decreases, so weight gain slows • “Picky eaters!” Over time, toddlers will meet their food needs • Self feeding is important
Nutrition • Adults must provide food that is nutrient dense • Offer nutritious foods first, so they fill up on them (not vice versa)
Table Foods • Avoid adding salt or sugar • Introduce foods in intervals (every 3 days) • Mash or cut foods • Giving them choice or having them “help” will Make them more likely to eat it
Choking • Avoid popcorn, grapes, peanut butter, hotdogs, raw carrots small and hard candies • What do you do if they are coughing? • What if they aren’t breathing?
Keep In Mind… • Children’s meals should be at the same time every day • Do not force them to eat foods they don’t like • Good habits begin early!
More to Remember… • Small child= small tummy! Do not expect a small child to eat as much food as a grown up! • Eat the RAINBOW!- large variety of foods!
