Getting Ready For Next Year: Fractions, Decimals and Percents Unit 13 Estimated Instructional Days: 8 Days
The remaining Units in Grade 5 (Units 13-16), will be formatted differently than Units 1-12. • Formats will be in PowerPoint form. • Core instruction will be provided in the following areas: • Fractions, Decimal and Percents • Ratios/Rates • Integers/Expressions/Inequalities • Graphing and Data • In addition, based on student data (Formative assessments, unit assessments, etc.), these last few weeks of school should also focus on differentiating your instruction (small groups) to meet the needs of students on current grade level standards not yet mastered. • It would be appropriate given the multitude of resources provided in Units 1-12 to revisit and utilize those resources not already used. • Only utilize current grade level content to determine students’ progress for the 4th nine weeks. Format for Remaining Units
Content Development The beginning of this unit builds on fraction and decimal concepts presented in Units 3-8 and prepares students for comparisons between decimals and fractions taught in Grade 6. In addition to comparing fractions and decimals, students will also be exposed to ordering fractions and decimals. “Percents are simply hundredths and as such are a third way of writing both fractions and decimals. For example, consider the fraction ¾. As a fraction expressed in hundredths, it is 75/100. When ¾ is written in decimal form, it is 0.75. Both 0.75 and 75/100 are read in the exactly the same way, ‘seventy-five hundredths’. When used in context, the fraction ¾ of something is the same as 0.75 or 75% of that same thing. Thus, percent is merely a new notation and terminology, not a new concept.” (Van De Walle 2010) Students will also be working with writing a number as the product of prime number factors. This builds upon finding factors which was presented in Grade 4, and prepares students for finding greatest common factors which will be taught in grade 6.
Highlighting SMPs for Fractions, Decimals and Percents • Students make connections between fraction, decimal and percent notation. (SMP 7) • Students utilize appropriate place value language when comparing and ordering decimals. (SMP 6) • Students use appropriate tools to model percents. (SMP 5) • Students apply knowledge of fraction, decimal and percent equivalency in problem solving contexts. (SMP 1,4) • Student use appropriate strategies to solve fraction division problems. (SMP 1,4)
