Response of SIDA • Several consultancies until 1992: • A quick drug survey in Luangprabang by IHCAR-MOH team • Round table discussion with key persons from MOH and International organization • Needs of a comprehensive National Drug Policy ( NDP)

Quick surveys • At different levels of the drug system in Vientiane • Health care seeking of households, • Dispensing practice of Pharmacies • Prescribing practices of Doctors
Evidence to support the NDP formulation • 60% self medication • 90% private pharmacies managed by physicians • 36% of consumers were advised by dispensers and • 15% dispensed by children in pharmacies • More than 50% of pharmacies were selling bad quality drugs • Average number of drugs/prescription: 3.12% in Central hospital

The National Drug Policy was tailored to Lao needs and endorsed by the Prime Minister in March 1993
