Grade Level: For 5th or 6thgrade (possibly 4th) • How idea was developed: It’s a good idea to broaden the students’ horizons and expose them to different types of genres, as well as go into greater depth and detail. Lesson more complex. Chose Legend of Sleepy Hollow to tie in with the season/Halloween and I really enjoy this story. Not for younger kids. Wanted the art portion to focus more on analysis, representation of text through illustration, and thinking outside of the box.

What are legends? • Passed on by storytelling (common in many cultures) • Similar to myths • They are made up stories • Are about people and their actions/deeds • Told for a purpose and based on facts, though not completely true • Either the person never did what the story says, history is changed to make the story more interesting or convincing, or to teach right from wrong (moral) • Are passed down generations

  8. Materials Needed For Art Lesson • Crayons • Markers • Colored Pencils • Paint • Scissors • Glue • Magazines • Sketchpad

Art Lesson Procedure • The idea is to create your own legend/story through illustration. • You can use any materials at your disposal (crayons, markers, colored pencils, magazines, objects, etc.) to create your illustration on your sketchpad that goes along with your legend. • If using magazines to create a collage-like picture, use scissors and glue to complete this. • You can choose to include text to help tell your legend. • Be creative!!!! • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuALZoi5Sf4&feature=related

  10. Modifications • Special Needs – Students with special needs can have legends chosen for them to illustrate or they can choose from a selection of legends. They can be helped with cutting out images/objects if doing a more collage-like picture. • Gifted – Gifted students can create a mini journal describing their procedure/back story for creating their legend. They can even expand on the lesson by creating a book for their legend.
