It can be represented as: ❶empirical formula of a chemical compound is the simplest whole number ratio of atoms in a compound (CnHnOn..) ❷molecular formulais the exact formula of a molecule, giving the types of atoms and the exact number of each type. In general: Molecular formula = (Empirical formula)n (Molecular formula)/(Empirical formula) = n Determination of empirical formula •Calcuate mass in grams of each element in 100 g of compound •Calculate number of moles of each element in 100 g of compound •Determine the molar ratio ( whole number if not multiply by integer to get the whole number) Obtain the empirical formula

Example :Determine the empirical and molecular formulas for a compound that gives the following mass: 71.65 % Cl 24.27 % C 4.07% H Molar mass = 98.96 g/mol Answer: •Determination of empirical formula Assume we have a 100.00 g sample 1- Calcuate mass in grams of each element in 100 g of compound mCl = 71.65 g, mC = 24.27 g and mH = 4.07 g 2- Calculate number of moles of each element in 100 g of compound nCl = (71.65 g)/(35.45 g mol-1) = 2.021 mol Cl

So all the reactants and products should be identified.

That is, how much water will just consume all the amount of methane, leaving no methane or water remaining?
