Rule of Law • The Rule of law is that the law itself, and not the individual, has the greatest power and that all individuals are subject to the law. • This idea comes for the Magna Carta. (Great Charter)
The Magna Carta • an English legal charter, originally issued in the year 1215. • Protects the rights of the people • Limits the power of the King of England. • led to the rule of constitutional law

Individual Rights and Freedoms • In a liberal democracy and individualistic societies we all have rights. • These include such rights as Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Association, and the right to life liberty and security of person. • But, these rights have limits… • Can we think of times when our rights could be limited.

Private Property • Ideas of property first developed in the Enlightenment. • Intially, it only applied to Land (Real Estate). • It is the idea that we can own things, stuff. • Now, some groups argue that property is never owned. • This causes some strange debates about what can be private property.
Economic Freedom • Our freedom to buy what we want and sell our labor to who we want are our economic freedoms. • Employers also have the freedom to choose who they employee?
Now, we do not really have complete economic freedom. • We still have laws and regulations. • Businesses in Canada still need to pay minimum wages, overtime, etc… • We have a social safety net. (known as the Welfare State, but that will come later)
Self Interest and Competition • Individualism and its related economic system (Capitalism) is based on the idea that people work for self-Interest. • Ideas developed by Adam Smith (Chapter 3). • The ideas of Supply and demand allow for better goods and service at better prices for the consumer. • Let’s look at this from a Fort McMurray Persepctive.
Finished. • Questions for tomorrow (kind of). • Think themes of Ideology. • Think structure of Individualism. • Think Importance of Renaissance.
