Background • Surgeon at LMH since 2004 • NSQIP Surgeon Champion since 2010 • LMH data collection began 2011 • Second SAR March 2013 • Based on 1st SAR and subsequent non-risk adjusted data, multidisciplinary front-line team achieved a 28% reduction in all UTIs over 3 month implementation
Role of a Surgeon Champion • Get educated about NSQIP • ACS NSQIP National Conference • Advertise and cheerlead = educate your peers • Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Nurses, Family Physicians … anyone who will listen • Work with the SCRs to understand the data • Present the data • Give your peers the tools they need to act on the data
Engaging Colleagues • Believe • If you don’t believe in NSQIP and what it can accomplish, no one else will • Make it real • UTI vignette • Make it achievable • Realistic goals
Engaging Colleagues • Give them ownership • “We have lots of ideas (aka best practices). We need you to tell us which ideas are the right ones.” • Grass roots, not top down • We know what is needed at our site • Use the in-house credible expertise • UTI best practices per your local respected Urologist • Use outside experts to galvanize discussion on major changes • Personal “report cards”
Multidisciplinary Team • Stop the “Us vs. Them” mentality before it starts • Everyone who touches the patient has a role to play • Credibility when all the players are at the table • Capacity to actually bring about sustainable change • Amazing insights when you ask everyone in a non-threatening environment • Share the successes as a team win • Builds cohesion in the department and builds enthusiasm for the next project
