  2. forbidding • Adj. -Something that is dangerous or threatening • Synonyms-hostile, grim, bleak, unfriendly, dismal • The abandoned house was forbidding and dark, so Olivia walked a different way home from school.

  3. battlement • Noun- a defensive structure at the top of a castle wall used for shooting intruders. • The knights climbed to the top of the battlement as the enemies approached the castle.

  4. guardian • Noun-a person who guards, protects, or preserves • Synonyms-protector, caretaker • My aunt was appointed guardian of the estate.

  5. chaos • Noun- a state of confusion or disorder • Synonym-disorder, bedlam, pandemonium, commotion • It was complete chaos when the tigers escaped from the zoo.

  6. heir • Noun-a person who inherits or is entitled to get something from another. • Synonyms-successor, recipient, beneficiary • Prince William is heir to the British throne.

  7. proclaimed • Verb-to announce or declare in an official manner • Synonyms-announced, declared, stated, said • The referee proclaimed the winner of the coin toss.

  8. Parchment • Noun- a stiff paper • The Pilgrims wrote the Mayflower Compact on a piece of parchment.

  9. dismiss • Verb- to give permission for a person to leave • Synonym-let go, discharge • We loaded the bus after my teacher dismissed us from class.

  10. Solarium • Noun- a glass enclosed room, exposed to the suns rays (*Hint solar means having to do with the sun) • We enjoyed sitting and reading in the solarium.

  11. Tunic • Noun- a long, gown-like, garment • Long ago, it was fashionable for men to wear tunics.

  12. Preparation • Noun-To prepare or plan in advance • Synonyms-plan, get ready, arrange • We had worked hard cleaning the house in preparation for my grandparent’s visit.

  13. dismounted • Verb-to get off of something; usually referring to getting off of a horse. • After the horseback ride, the guide told us to dismount the horse.

  14. Enclosure • Noun-something surrounded by a fence or wall. • We kept our cows behind an enclosure to keep them from escaping.

  15. suspicions • Noun-The act of suspecting; to doubt or mistrust • Synonyms-doubt, worry, misgivings • I had my suspicions about the new boy, he didn’t seem to be very pleasant.

  16. Tournament • Noun- a game in which competitors compete in a series of events. • Synonym-contest, event, match • My cousin participated in a chess tournament last fall.

  17. tension • Noun- • 1. the state of being stretched or strained. • 2. mental or emotional strain • Synonyms-strain, pressure • There was a lot of tension in the room before FCAT testing began.
