COMMON CORE STANDARDS • The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them • http://vimeo.com/51933492 • CHALLENGES • There are no SJUSD board adopted curriculum, in any subject area, that are aligned to CCSS. The instruction has been to select appropriate material to supplement existing curriculum. • REPORT CARDS – We will be piloting the district’s new report card that will better align with the CCSS, but it is still a working document.

  8. SMARTER BALANCE • Testing Window April 6 – May 16th • Testing schedule will be sent home prior to testing • Please ensure that every effort is made for your child to attend school on testing dates. • Smarter Balance Tests replace the STAR tests given previously.

CLASSWORK, HOMEWORK & ATTENDANCE • It is our goal to have the students do as little homework as possible because we recognize our families’ busy schedules and value the evening family time. • We will cover as much as we can at school and given students as much time as possible to work on assignments in class where we can support them. • This being said, STUDENTS WILL MISS A LOT WHEN ABSENT so please do everything to ensure daily attendance. • See “Homework Expectations” in your child’s binder and please note ABSENCE MAKE UP WORK policy and procedure…THIS IS A DOOZY!

READING/ELA • WHOLE GROUP NOVEL STUDY - Guided lessons to support comprehension, understanding author’s viewpoint, identifying/creating theme statements, and evaluating/understanding writer’s craft. The Watsons Go To Birmingham 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, and The Cay by Theodore Taylor • LITERATURE CIRCLES – Leveled reading in small groups where students will exercise the reading strategies taught in whole group with an emphasis on academic discourse. • Grammar – Teacher selected lessons taught in ELA & in home classroom • Spelling– Sound patterns • Vocabulary – Novel specific & Words On The Vine

ACCELERATED READER • Students will have an individualized trimester point goal based on their ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) and reading 30 minutes a day. • Students are expected to work daily to achieve their goal through daily & nightly reading. • Students will have their ZPD and goal noted in their planner. • Students who achieve or exceed their AR goal will earn credit towards their reading comprehension grade. • Reading comprehension grades may be negatively affected if a student does not reach their goal. • Students will be re-assessed each trimester and new goals will be set.

WRITING • Will be taught across the curriculum • Reading: Response To Literature in the form of “quick writes” as appropriate to the reading content. • History: Research & report writing in the form of structured paragraphs, informational booklets, letters, multi-page reports • Science: Gathering research & evidence, outlining for the purpose of report writing and creating multi-media presentations. • Argument Writing will be taught extensively in the home classroom.

  15. MATH • ENGAGE NEW YORK – Common Core Standards based instruction in the form of modules for in depth learning. • HOLT MATHEMATICS – Former program which will still be used for skill practice and development.

  17. EGYPT CONTRACT Students learn about Ancient Egypt via the Egypt Contract. This comprehensive study includes Egyptian culture, religion, history, and symbolism.

  19. A Night of Ancient tales We enhance our study of ancient civilizations by bringing ancient tales to life. Greek myths, Gilgamesh, and the story of Osiris are some of the stories performed.

SCIENCE Students will use the text book and hands-on lessons to •plate tectonics, energy forms and processes, continental drift, & sea floor spreading theory • earthquake and volcanoes, types, causes and safety precautions •construct graphic notes and PowerPoint Presentations using computer programs

CHAPERONES • MUST BE FINGERPRINTED –See Terre Terzakis • MUST SUBMIT A NEW DRIVING FORM EACH SCHOOL YEAR! • Fingerprint clearance & driving forms are due October 1st • Chaperone email groups will be made based on cleared chaperones as of October 1st and will be contacted as chaperones are needed. • Westminster Woods chaperone information will be sent home soon and we request parents be fingerprinted and have driving forms in prior to the due date so we can arrange for this important trip as soon as possible.
