So who is evangelizing Satellite Data and Aerial Photo? • Google • Microsoft While we are busy competing and creating our proprietary formats, the mainstream industry came to help us in marketing and propagating use of satellite images and aerial photos
What made it happen? • Prior to Google Earth and MS Virtual Earth - most people didn’t know what imagery can do for them because they could not get access to imagery in the first place. Now only our imagination is the limit.. What made this happen: • Free Public Access • Ease of Visualization • Ease of Use • No knowledge of GIS required
So what’s given for Satellite Imagery and Aerial Photos? • Google and Microsoft has opened up the appetite. We hear customers saying – ‘YehDil Mange More……’ HIGH RESOLUTION Images.. • 5 cm Aerial is now a reality and possibly that’s the future in the near future…
So what’s stopping exponential use of satellite images and aerial photos in business? • GeoEye : ~ $170 million • DigitalGlobe : $100 – 200 million range (not disclosed.. we guesstimate) • SPOT : $100 – 200 million range (not disclosed.. we guesstimate) • NRSA – $8-30 Million in data sales All the above is likely to total up to be less than revenues of a mapping company that has revenues in excess of $800 Million and valued at over $8 Billion!!!
Less EVANGELIZING by Industry • More work needed to be done by the Imagery companies to EVANGELIZE the use of data – • Embrace Open Standards & increase interoperability • Propagate use of satellite data for small and medium scales industries (the way Google and MS did for public..)
Restrictive Mapping Policies • Restrictive Mapping Policies in several countries including India • Lobby Globally as well as locally to open up the mapping policies
Appropriate Price Points • Price points of satellite imagery – low but still not at a point when small businesses start using high resolution data in regular day to day operations
Leverage ‘hidden’ Processing Power • A combination of technology enhancement and use of experienced scalable manpower in countries like India can possibly help change the rules of the game further ..
Limited Scale and Speed A typical mapping project done over multiple years Recent RFP from one county is US spread a 30,000 parcel mapping project to 3 years due to fund limitations
Unlock the value of Satellite Imagery and Aerial Photos • A photo speaks a million words.. But value will be unlocked when there is a large scale initiative to capture specific features from images
Conclusion • High Resolution Aerial Photo is the future.. • We need to: • Evangelize • Open up mapping policies • Decrease price of images • Increase processing power • Increase Speed and Scale • Pick up value from images • We can truly then unlock greater value!
