  2. Introductions • Carissa Bavosi, Social Worker/CST Grades 2-5 • Michele Thompson, School Psychologist/CST Grades 6-8 • Jennifer Peirson, Guidance Counselor Grades 5-8

  3. Developmental Needs of Adolescents • Autonomy:Adolescents long for independence. They want to feel as though they have a voice and that their voice is being heard. • Competence:Adolescents need to feel that they are good at doing things. They can think, they can create, they solve problems and they can understand. They need to feel worthwhile and as productive members of the school community. • Relationships:Peer relationships rule their lives. Adolescents need to feel connected all day, everyday to other adolescents. • Fun: Element that gets them out of bed in the morning. The school needs to provide for fun, engaging activities in quick, healthy, educational ways.

  4. Circle of Power and Respect • CPR meets social/emotional needs of middle school students: • Increases social emotional skills • Increases attitudes about self and others • Increases pro-social and positive classroom behavior • Increases student achievement • Focus of CPR is on community building • Allows for smooth developmental and academic transitions

  5. The Big 2 • 4th to 5th Grade • Within Little Silver Public Schools • Point Road School to Markham Place School • 8th to 9th Grade • Little Silver Public Schools to Red Bank Regional High School District • Transition Process • Orientations/information sessions, along with other supports to allow for a smooth and successful transition for both students and parents

  6. 4th to 5th Grade Moving Up Day • Save-the-Date: May 25, 2011 • All fourth grade students come over to Markham Place • Opportunity to meet the 5th grade teachers, take a tour of the building and meet with the Building Principal • Markham Place Peer Leaders help out

  7. 4th to 5th Grade Parents’ Night • Open to all parents of fourth grade students • Opportunity to meet with Markham Place Building Principal and Guidance Counselor • Will be held in May 2011 – TBA

  9. 4th to 5th Grade 5th Grade • Designed as an elementary school within a middle school • 5th grade teachers work together as a team

  11. 4th to 5th Grade 5th Grade Schedule • 6 Day Cycle • CPR – All fifth graders remain in their homeroom • Period 1 – Math • Period 2/3 – Language Arts Block • Period 3 – Physical Education (2/6 days) • Period 4/5 – Lunch/Recess

  12. 4th to 5th Grade Period 6/7 • Science (Days 1,2,3) • Social Studies (Days 4,5,6) • Science and Social Studies are taught by two different teachers (one of which is the homeroom teacher)

  13. 4th to 5th Grade Period 8 • Encore (Specials) • Different Encore class each marking period • Art • Music • Computers/Media Studies • Spanish

  14. 4th to 5th Grade Period 9 • Enrichment Courses: • Marking Pd 1 and 4 offerings the same • Marking Pd 2 and 3 offerings the same • Assigned to students • P/F grading • Variety of courses offered

  18. 8th to 9th Grade Communication Is Key • Markham Place Guidance Counselor works collaboratively with RBR and the 4 Year Academies • Child Study Team works collaboratively with RBR Child Study Team and Guidance

  19. 8th to 9th Grade Red Bank Regional Save-the-Dates • RBR Special Services and Guidance hosts an information session for parents of special education students of all sending districts – TBA • Parents’ Night for Parents of 8th Graders – October 2010 • Student Orientation (spend the day at RBRHS) – late August 2011 • Red Bank Regional High School: www.RBRHS.org • Monmouth County Vocational School District: www.mcvsd.org

  20. 8th to 9th Grade Red Bank Regional Scheduling • RBR Guidance Department comes to Markham Place Library to meet with students and parents • Develop 9th Grade Schedule • End of March 2011 – TBA • Appointment dates/times assigned • Approximately 15 minutes • Electives/foreign language scheduled • Course Catalogues will be provided to students in advance of scheduling meeting

  21. 8th to 9th Grade Red Bank Regional Summer Slam • RBRHS offers a ½ credit course in the summer • All students are invited to apply to attend • Great social opportunity • Academic component • Run through The Source (Counseling Center) • RBRHS will present a Summer Slam Orientation to Markham Students – TBA

  22. 8th to 9th Grade Special Education Transition • Internal Articulation Meeting • Case Manager and Special Education Teacher meet with HS CST to review all 8th graders and their needs • Transitioning will be discussed at 7th and 8th grade IEP meetings • Individualized transitioning will be developed as needed

  24. 8th to 9th Grade Extended School Year • As of July 1, 2011 – student attends RBRHS • High School provides ESY program (as per IEP) • Helps with transition to High School
