B&S Databases • The Library provides access to many online magazine and journal databases • Access is available to registered students from any computer with an Internet connection
Databases • A database is any organized collection of data that can be retrieved using established search procedures. • Example: telephone books (databases of names, addresses and phone numbers) organized alphabetically

Searching Databases • Keyword Search – you enter words that may be found anywhere in text. • Subject Search – headings determined and articles placed in categories based on main topics in articles Review
Search Tips Truncation • Use * at end of word (Ex: Faith* retrieves faith, faithful, faiths) • ? Question mark replaces individual characters within a word (Ex: wom?n retrieves woman, women, womyn, etc.)
Search Tips Logical (Boolean) operators AND, OR, NOT Review
Search Tips • “Quotations” • Use to search for a phrase (Ex: “affordable housing” ) • Nesting ( ) • Use parentheses to group search terms and logical operators in any order • Ex: (race or color) and discrimination • Ex: (race and discrimination) not “affirmative action”
Where can you find the article? • Is it full-text in the database? • HTML - formatted for web • PDF - portable document format, sometimes digital facsimile of journal/magazine article. • HTML often opens up faster We will find articles in our in-class activity
