The entrepreneur is one who, starting with nothing more than an idea or a prototype, has the ability to take a business to the point at which it can sustain itself on internally generated cash flow.
Five factors define social entrepreneurship: • Adopting a mission to create and sustain social value ; • Recognizing and relentlessly pursuing new opportunities to serve that mission; • Engaging in a process of continuous innovation, adaptation, and learning; • Acting boldly without limited by resources currently in hand; and • Exhibiting a heightened sense of accountability to the constituencies served and for the outcomes created.
A social entrepreneur is any person, in any sector, who uses income strategies to pursue a social objective.
The social entrepreneur has to generate income that is re-invested into the mission thereby allowing the sustainability of the programs and services of the social enterprise.
Challenges in the non-profit environment : • Community needs are growing in size and diversity. • More non-profits are competing for government and philanthropic funds. • Traditional forms of funding are becoming smaller and less reliable. • New for-profit businesses are competing with non-profits to serve community needs. • Funders and donors are demanding more accountability.
How can the social mission be sustained if the organization that pursues it cannot sustain itself?
The SME can pursue a social objective through: • Corporate social responsibility or CSR • Formation of foundations • Contribution to social enterprises • Membership in social enterprises
