AI and Gaming • The purpose of AI in games is to create a realistic representation of life’s behavior. • AI helps to create characters with human-like behavior and skills for a challenge in many different genres of gaming. • These genres can range anywhere from first person shooters to role playing games.
Today’s AI Games • Some examples of games that use a great deal of Artificial Intelligence today are: • World of Warcraft • Final Fantasy XI • Unreal Tournament (series)
How Fun Would it Be? • If While Playing a Game: • You beat opponents too easily (OR) • You were murdered by opponents all the time • ???? • Artificial Intelligence in Gaming balances these possibilities for a positive gaming experience.
Example: World of Warcraft • In World of Warcraft, the NPCs (non-playable characters) you fight are programmed to fight intelligently. Although the game itself isn’t realistic, the NPCs fight you almost like you were fighting a human on the other end.
AI in World of Warcraft • Example: Monsters walk around obstacles such as hills or objects • If you run away from them, they will eventually get tired and stop following you.
AI in World of Warcraft • Monsters will surely attack you if they have a good chance to kill you. • Others will not attack unless you attack them first. • Some will run if you are about to kill them.
AI in World of Warcraft • As you “level-up” in the game, the creatures you fight become more intelligent and more powerful, just as you do from playing and learning in the game.
In the End... • Artificial Intelligence in World of Warcraft makes for an interesting gaming experience. • One must be aware of a creature’s abilities, or their own life could be in jeopardy.
