  2. Icebreaker – Twin Cities Charades Without saying anything, pick your favorite part of the highlights tour from last night. Got it? Now come up with a motion or action to depict that item. Be ready to share!

  3. Goals Participants will be able to… • Create a draft service-learning action plan • Present a 30 second ‘elevator speech’ based on page 1 of your action plan • Use the conference guide to select your conference workshops for Thursday and Friday

  4. Review What are the three main components of the service-learning cycle?

  5. Creating your service-learning action plan The service-learning action plan is a tool that NYLC has created to help you move through the pre-service portion of the service-learning cycle. As you move through each step be sure to think about the 8 service-learning standards we learned yesterday and see if they apply.

  6. Writing your mission statement Tips for writing an effective mission statement: • Keep it brief – limit your mission statement to 1 sentence • Be clear – focus on the heart of your SL project • This is your slogan – memorize it!

  7. Completing page 1 Now that you have your mission statement take the next 2 minutes to complete page 1 of your service-learning action plan.

  8. Completing pages 2 -4 Now that we have the basics down its time to tackle some of the details of your service learning action plan. As you complete pages 2 – 4 use the guiding questions posted around the room to help you compose your answers. **Remember, anyone should be able to pick up your action plan and know exactly what it is you plan to accomplish!

  9. Break Take a quick 5 minute break and be ready for an energizer when you return!

  11. Writing SMART goals For the last portion of your action plan you will be writing project goals. Please take a minute to look over the SMART requirements. Questions?

Writing SMART goals Specific Measurable Appropriate Relevant Tangible • My project is to increase recycling in my neighborhood. • Stop pollution tomorrow • Not appropriate • Make people feel better about recycling • How will you measure? • Plant flowers in parks in my neighborhood • Not relevant

  13. Completing pages 6 and 7 Now that you have an understanding of SMART goals its time to complete pages 6 and 7. Remember to check your work to make sure that its SMART!

  14. Divide into feedback groups For the next 30 minutes we will be working in new groups to help each other refine our service-learning action plan. Number off 1 through 4.

  15. Wow/wonder feedback circle Wow – something you found particularly interesting, relevant, or well-stated Wonder – an area where you need clarification, a concern you have, any remaining question

  16. Wow/wonder feedback circle Your task – Each person will have 3 minutes to present your project. The rest of the group will then have 3 minutes to share their feedback in the wow/wonder format.

  17. Adult mentor training Chaperones and mentors will now break off to join Lana for a brief mentor training.

  19. The elevator speech challenge! Creating your elevator speech – Introduce yourself! Use your mission statement Smile and make eye contact If the person you meet could be a partner, exchange contact information

  20. Mingle Now’s you chance to try out your elevator speech. Take the next 6 minutes to mingle. Try to meet as many people as you can and present your elevator speech. Keep track of the speeches you hear, we’ll be voting for our favorites at the end!

  21. Vote now! Write the project name of the elevator speech you thought was the most effective!

  22. Conference workshops You will have the opportunity to attend 4 workshop sessions, 2 on Thursday and 2 on Friday. You will have the next 20 minutes to look through the conference guide and decide which workshops you would like to attend.

  23. Conference workshops Each day the workshops are grouped into the following tracks: Civic contributions Classroom Transformation Global Learning Scientists and Stewards Student Achievement
