  1. The Disciple Maker’s Prayer Part 2 Doing and Asking John 17:6-24

  2. Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer • Listen to this prayer • Know that Jesus is at God’s right hand talking to the Father • “Jesus Christ does not pray for the world today” • His ministry of intercession is for His own who are in the world • He doesn’t pray for the world; He died for the world • He has sent the Holy Spirit into the world to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment • What more could He do for the world?

  3. Review • What God gave His Son • Glory to Reflect (v. 1, 5) • Authority to Save (v. 2-3) • Work to Do (vv. 4, 6a) • Men to Build Up (vv. 6,b-7) • Words to Declare (v. 8) • What the Son gives to us! • Glory to Reflect • Authority to Save • Work to Do • Men to Build Up • Words to Declare • Romans 8:16-17 • 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

  4. Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer • What the Father Gave to His Son (vv. 1-6) • What the Son Has Done for His Disciples (vv. 7-19) • What the Son Asks for His Disciples (vv. 9-24)

  5. What a Disciple Maker Does for His Disciples • Manifests the Father for Them (v. 6-7) • Gives Them God’s Word (vv. 8, 14) • Keeps Them in the Name of the Father (v. 12) • Sends Them into the World (v. 18) • Sanctifies Himself for Them (v. 19)

  6. Manifests the Father (v. 6-7) • I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. • Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. • In the Bible, “name” refers to “nature” • “I have manifested Your name” means “I have revealed the nature of God” • John 1:18 - one of the ministries of the Son was to declare the Father • “declared” = “to unfold, to lead, to show the way” • Gradually, by His words and His deeds, Jesus revealed to them the nature of God, as they were able to bear it (John 16:12)

  7. Gives Them God’s Word • 8 For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me • I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world

  8. Gives Them God’s Word • The Lord had given them the Words of the Father • He had not given them property or money or transportation, but the Words of the Father • How did Jesus get the Words of the Father? • Isaiah 50:4 The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of disciples, That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple. (NASB)

  9. Gives Them God’s Word • After following Jesus for three years, these disciples believed that He came from the Father • They knew who He was • They did not understand His purpose and certainly not His death and resurrection • They knew He had come from God • They believed that God had sent Him because of what they saw in Jesus and heard from Him

  10. Keeps Them in the Name of the Father • While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled • The safety and security of the believer - God keeps His own • Our security depends on the nature of God, not our own character or conduct • Jesus kept His disciples and they knew they could depend on Him • Jesus has not changed!

  11. Sends Them into the World • 18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world • Luke 19:10 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost • Matthew 28:18-20 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

  12. Sends Them into the World • Mark 15:15-16 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. • Luke 24:46-49 46 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are witnesses of these things. 49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

  13. Sends Them into the World • John 20:21 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” • Acts 1:8 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

  14. Sanctifies Himself • 19 And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth • “sanctify” means to be set apart, to be separated • Jesus actually sanctified Himself to the point of death! • Jesus was sent out of heaven into the world to be a witness of the Father and we have been sent out into the world to bear a witness

  15. Sanctifies Himself • Philippians 2:5-11 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  16. What a Disciple Maker Asks for His Disciples • To keep them safe from the world and the evil one (vv. 9-12, 15-16) • To make them one (v. 11) • To have Christ’s joy fulfilled in them (vv. 13-14) • To sanctify them by God’s truth (vv. 17-19) • To multiply them (vv. 20-23) • To bring them to be with Jesus in heaven (v. 24)

  17. To keep them safe from the world and the evil one • “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. 12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. • 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

  18. To keep them safe from the world and the evil one • The Word of God causes problems in the world today • The Bible teaches that you cannot save yourself, that only Christ can save you • The world doesn’t want to hear that! • Satan does not want us saying that! • “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world” (v. 16) • The measure in which believers realize this, the more completely we fulfill His will and His purpose • We are the ones to whom God has committed the ministry of His kingdom • When people see our faith or power or compassion, they know is beyond our human capability • Then they will know that Christ has supernaturally changed our life and that we are sent from God!

  19. To make them one • 11 Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are • He prays the Father that His disciples might be one • He’s not praying for an ecumenical movement or that we all join the same denomination • He prays that we should be one as the Father and the Son are one • We are one in love, one in purpose, one in faith, and one in strategy for reaching the world • The Father has answered every prayer of His Son • The Holy Spirit takes all true believers and baptizes them into the body of Christ, identifies them in the body of Christ

  20. To have Christ’s joy fulfilled in them • 13 But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. • I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world • Did you realize that Christ wants you to have His joy fulfilled in your life? • Joy = chara = an inner gladness; a deep seated pleasure

  21. To have Christ’s joy fulfilled in them • The source of the believer’s joy: • The fellowship of the Father and His Son brings joy - 1 John 1:3-4; Psalm 16:11 • Victory over sin, death, and hell brings joy - John 14:28; John 16:20-22; Isaiah 12:3; Isaiah 61:10 • Repentance brings joy - Luke 15:7, 10 • The hope of glory brings joy - Romans 14:17; Hebrews 12:2; 1 Peter 4:13 • The Lord’s Word, the revelations, commandments, and promises which He made bring joy - John 15:11 • Obeying the commandments of Christ and the will of God bring joy - John 15:11 • Answered prayer brings joy - John 16:24 • The presence and fellowship of believers brings joy - 1 John 1:3-4 • Converts bring joy - Luke 15:5; Phil. 4:1; 1 Thes. 2:19-20; Psalm 126:5. • Hearing that others walk in the truth brings joy - 3 John 1:4 • Giving brings joy - 2 Cor. 8:2; Hebrews 10:34

  22. To sanctify them by God’s truth • Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth • As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world • And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth • Sanctify means to set apart • The believer is not of the world; he is set apart • The believer is set apart by the Word of God • The Word reveals the mind of God • The Word sets you apart for a particular ministry

  23. To sanctify them by God’s truth • Sanctify also means holiness, dedication, consecration • God called believers out of the world and away from the old life it offered, the old life of sin and death • How can we be in the world without being part of the world? • We need to be sanctified daily in the truth • We are to receive that truth through God’s Word • Time spent in Bible reading, in listening to God, and in obeying scripture will strengthen us against the temptations and evil in the world

  24. To multiply them • “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; • that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me • And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: • I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me

  25. To multiply them • Jesus prayed not only for the disciples but for all those who would believe because of the disciples • Everything we know about Christ has come down to us from the spiritual multiplication of those early disciples • John was written by one of the twelve disciples • Matthew also was an eyewitness account • Peter was a disciple, and James and Jude were brothers of Christ • Mark was discipled by Peter • Paul received visions from Christ but was also discipled by Barnabas who was discipled by Peter • Luke not only learned from the eyewitnesses, he was also discipled by Paul

  26. To multiply them • Every believer has multiplied spiritually from the few men and women who were discipled by Christ and who then discipled others! • They did it by pouring their lives into others the way Jesus poured His life into them • “I in them, and Thou in me”

  27. To be with Jesus in heaven • Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world • Some day these words will be fulfilled in your life! • Jesus loves you so much that He wants you to spend eternity with Him • The Believer’s Bible Commentary • "The Son desires to have His people with Himself in glory. Every time a believer dies, it is, in a sense, an answer to this prayer. If we realized this, it would be a comfort to us in our sorrow. To die is to go to be with Christ...."
