  13. Our LRD Approach Balances Performance and Provides Flexibility 3.88 Mbps Limited LRD Bandwidth Selection of compression applied to selected APIDs for downlink for increased mission data throughput 1330 & 2130 1730 VIIRS CMIS CrIS Programmable LRD downlink provides flexibility for the future

  14. Key Field Terminal Performance Requirements • Key performance requirements govern the attributes of the aperture, RF front-end and demodulator • “Processing” requirements (e.g., decoding) can be viewed as “functional” requirements • LRD Aperture-specific requirements: • 1-meter diameter • Aperture/RF Front-end requirements: • G/T, passband amplitude and phase response (components of implementation loss) • RF Front-end/Demodulator requirements: • Implementation loss (covering passband response, phase noise, demodulator performance with respect to theory, et al) • Link budget entries serve as starting points for these requirement values • Requirements are not independent, trade-offs exist

  16. HRD EDR Production Timing Assessment

  17. LRD EDR Production Timing Assessment

  18. Field Terminal Software Data Processor Element Design • Open Systems Group standards compliance at interfaces minimizes configurations • Programmable LRD downlink favors 8 Priority EDRs • Supports selection of onboard LRD data compression rates by APID • Provides flexible ancillary data approach • Dynamic ancillary data via satellite downlink to meet System Specification performance • NPOESS FT Mission Support Data Server via Internet for increased performance

  19. FTS EDR Performance • HRD EDR Performance • 99% of EDR performance attributes meet or exceed performance thresholds • Analysis shows latency requirements achievable with current COTS desktop workstations • As with the IDPS software, the FT software adapts to missing channel data or missing ancillary data and uses graceful degradation rules • Lossless RICE compression on VIIRS • LRD EDR Performance • Meets key users’ needs: 0.8 km resolution imagery and programmable downlink • Produces the 8 high priority EDRs at or near LRD objective levels • Produces all 15 lower priority EDRs and required predecessor EDR products • Designed to automatically recognize missing channels and ancillary data • Lossless and Lossy JPEG2000 compression on selected APIDs • selection of compression level to APID ongoing

  20. Field Terminal Ancillary Data Approach • Dynamic Ancillary Data contained within LRD and HRD downlinks to meet specified performance levels • From the NWP Forecast model for six elevation levels at a given geographic location repeated for 12,750 geographic locations around the world • LRD Dynamic Ancillary Data within LRD downlink • Surface Pressure • HRD Dynamic Ancillary Data within HRD downlink • Temperature • Humidity • Surface Pressure • Standard Pressure Levels • Wind Speed, Wind Direction • PrecipitableWater • Effective Sunspot Number and Global Geomagnetic Kp for SESS EDR production • NPOESS FT Mission Support Data Server via Internet for increased EDR performance • Contains full set of Official Ancillary data • Contains full set of NPOESS Auxiliary data • Contains Community bulletins as to System status • Antenna pointing information for signal acquisition

  21. Equal-distant Data Distribution for Ancillary Data Equal-distant ancillary data cells provide for efficient data handling and storage: FT Approach 12,750 cells Lat/Lon Approach 64,800 cells Ancillary data cells corresponding to two VIIRS swaths

  22. What is NPOESS planning? • NPOESS responsible for building software and terminal specifications, but not for building terminals • NPOESS will publish specifications and design trade information for users • NPOESS will make software available on the program website for download • NPOESS will deliver data to users world-wide in accordance with US national data policy • Data will be downlinked openly around the world at no cost to receivers • Capability for data encryption/data denial exists for national defense needs • Denial can be done on a world-wide or geographic basis • NPOESS calls the world-wide users “field terminals” (to differentiate from the Weather Centrals)
