Plot Points • Amir has his first real conversation with Soraya • Soraya explains to Amir why she wants to be a teacher…it is because she taught her house servant to read and she was proud of herself • Baba gets cancer, but he wants it to be a secret • Baba has a seizure at the flea market and is taken to the hospital • Amir decides he wants to marry Soraya, so Baba asks General Sahib for Soraya’s hand in marriage. • General Sahib grants his blessing for their marriage • Soraya calls Amir to tell him her secret…She ran away and had a relationship with another man • Amir feels guilty for his secret, but he does not share it with Soraya

I opened my mouth and almost told her how I’d betrayed Hassan, lied, driven him out, and destroyed a forty-year old relationship between Baba and Ali. But I didn’t” (165).
