  2. Introductions • What is your name? • Where you teach? • What you teach this year? • What is something fun that happened over the summer?

  3. High school leadership • Kelly Batten: Executive Director of Secondary and CTE • Derrick Jordan: Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Services • Beth Seawell: Administrative Assistant to Kelly Batten • Spencer Register: Secondary Instruction Program Facilitator

  4. Spencer Register • Instructional Program Facilitator’s Role • Supervise & assist with the development of district created curriculum documents. • Provide supervision & assistance for contracted high school projects. • Maintain Communication with NCDPI regarding updates. • Research resources, instructional strategies, etc. that can be incorporated. • Conduct high school walk-throughs for the purpose of: • Identifying the strengths in the instruction • Identifying areas of needed professional development and/or coaching • Perform classroom observations • A teacher can request an observation to help identify additional strategies that can be used or to show off a special activity. • A principal can request that a teacher be observed for instructional assistance. Prior notice will be provided to the teacher by the principal.

  5. Observation Feedback • When a classroom observation is performed, written feedback will be provided to you. • For classroom walk-throughs, occasional feedback may be provided. If you do not receive feedback and would like some, simply ask.

  6. County Update • The county science fair date will be Thursday Dec. 13th at Jordan-Mathews which has offered to be the host site again. We appreciate Jordan-Mathews offering to be the host site again given their central geographic location and their experience at hosting the event. • Additional information will be forthcoming about exact timelines. Schools are free to set their own date for your particular school’s science fair date.

  16. What can we (Science) do? Students need to be able to read complex informational texts with independence and confidence because the vast majority of reading in college and workforce training programs will be sophisticatednonfiction

  17. What can we (Science) do? Students must be able to write. To do this we need to help them learn how to: -express thoughts -choose appropriate audience and words -use technology for composition and research -cite sources correctly

  40. ACT Science – 2011 Results Science Benchmark is a 24 (This # is an indicator of college readiness) What does this data mean?????

  41. ACT Science: Obstacles It is the LAST section of the ACT Students have 35 minutes for 40 questions
