Exponents Tutorial 3f
exponent base An Exponent is : a number, letter, or algebraic expression written above and to the right of another number, letter, or expression called the base. In the expressions x2 and xn, the number 2 and the letter n are the exponents respectively of the base x. x 2
The exponent indicates the power to which the base is to be raised. This means that if you have x3 then you would multiply x by itself three times : x3 = x x x or 33 = 3 3 3 Any number to zero power (40) equals 1.
Exponent Rules If two numbers having the same bases are being multiplied, add the exponents of those numbers. x2 x3 = x(2+3) = x5 or 32 33 = 3(2+3) = 35 or 75 74 =79
Exponent Rules If two numbers having the same bases are being divided, subtract the exponent of the 2nd term from the 1st term. x3 ÷ x2 = x(3-2) = x1 or 53 ÷ 52 = 5(3-2) = 51 or 27 ÷ 23 =24
Exponent Rules If an exponent is being raised by another exponent then multiply the exponents. (x3)2 = x3 x3 = x6 or (62)4 = 68
