BACKGROUND TO UMU • Uganda Martyrs University is a private, faith-based institution founded by the Catholic Bishops of Uganda in 1993. • It was chartered in 2005 and has the following component units: -The Institute of Ethics and Development Studies -The Faculty of Agriculture -The Faculty of Business Administration & Management -The Faculty of the Built Environment -The Faculty of Education -The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences -The Faculty of Science - The East African School of Diplomacy, Governance and International Studies -School of Postgraduate Studies -Mother Kevin Post Graduate Medical School
UMU AND EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT • Formal links between UMU and ESD started in 2009 • The Faculty of Education wrote a proposal in form of ESD Change Concept submitted to SIDA & Ramboll Natura AB • Two representatives of UMU successfully attended International Training Programme in Sweden and Kenya • Topic was Mainstreaming ESD in UMU
PREPARATIONS FOR ITP & PARTICIPATION IN MESA • Institutional Audit for all faculties, institute and schools which indicated that almost all of them had got some elements of ESD in their courses • Preparatory workshops to sensitise staff ,students and management on issues of ESD and implications of Change Project
OBJECTIVES OF ITP • The main objective of ITP was to create an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences in ESD in the higher education sector. • This programme was used to deepen our understanding of environmental, social cultural and economic dynamics of sustainable development
OBJECTIVES OF ITP (Continued) • Specific objectives: -poverty reduction & sustainable development -capacity development & change processes in participants, parent institutions & home countries Strengthening of methods, processes & monitoring to enable effective education -improve institutional infrastructure for ESD
OBJECTIVES OF ITP (Continued) • Increase the awareness of the importance of effective ESD in higher education • Stimulate development & sustainability of networks in the field of higher education
ACTION DURING ITP IN SWEDEN & KENYA • Refinement of our change project to : MAINSTREAMING ESD IN UGANDA MARTYRS UNIVERSTY‘S PROGRAMMES & POLICIES THROUGH MANAGEMENT , STAFF & STUDENT LEADER ‘S CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT • Selection of strategies and modality of project implementation
ACTION DURING ITP (Continued) • We produced course outlines for the training of management, staff and student leaders • We put together resources to be used I training • We planned how the training was to be done • We proposed to initiate process of policy change to bring about the mainstreaming of ESD in UMU • Sensitisation seminar for the whole UMU community
ACTIVITIES AT UMU AFTER ITP IN 2009 • The training for management, staff and student leaders was carried out as proposed • A seminar for the whole UMU community was carried out • Evaluation was carried out and a report was submitted to SIDA and UNEP
WHAT HAS TAKEN PLACE SINCE THE ITP IN 2009 • UMU won a prize at the African level in the entry for outreach & community engagement initiatives • The proposals to mainstream ESD in UMU was tabled to management and Senate where it was accepted in principle • The process of developing the Uganda Martyrs University Education for Sustainable Development in going on inspired by our National ESD Strategy • Since then the Mainstreaming of ESD has been incorporated in the current ten year institutional strategic plan and is embedded in the revised University Charter • The processes of setting up the Greater Masaka Regional Centre of Expertise has been initiated with the collaboration of NEMA and National Commission for UNESCO
OTHER INITIATIVES • The Faculty of Education offers an MA in Education and Development in which one of the courses is Education for Sustainable Development • The Faculty of Agriculture offers a degree BSc Organic Agriculture and MSc in Agroecology. They plan to set up a Regional Centre of Excellence for Organic Agriculture for the whole of Africa • The Faculty of the Built Environment has partnered with UN Habitat in area of Research and Training as regards Energy Conservation • The Department of Governance is setting up a Regional Centre for Sustainable Peace and Conflict Resolution

STUDENT INITIATIVES • The Professor Wangari Maathai Students Initiative • Managing Plastic Waste Wisely • Gathering Inorganic Products to Clean the Environment( by one of our alumnae)
STAFF DEVELOPMENT • At least five members of staff have just finished studies to do with Education for Sustainable Development and a good number are still enrolled for similar programmes
