He is not satisfied with his restricted normal life and aims higher. The novel’s theme takes form as a seagull learning about life and flight, but is really about self-perfection and self-sacrifice. Jonathan Livingston Seagull encourages individuality and conviction; without these, one cannot overcome hardships and transcend a simply physical existence. The book's suggest that if one does what he likes and ignores everything else, he will be fulfilled and transcend even death with few problems. One can apply the themes to various life situations.

The book is simple enough for the most immature young adult, but at the same time dense enough to satisfy more mature readers.
