  2. As fishing regulations started strangling sport divers, Randy decided we had to organize to promote our interest.On March 14, 2001, he joined with the United Anglers of Southern California and recruited many northern California divers.

  3. A year later, dissatisfied with a lack of progress on the political front, he jumped to the Recreational Fishing Alliance, taking us divers with him.

  4. August 29, 2002Led by Randy, 200 recreational divers and anglers attended an Oakland forum of the F & G Commission, protesting DF&G preferences to commercial fishing.

  5. Randy united us on promoting our viewpoints of: • Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) • Nearshore rockfish • Sustainable commercial fisheries • Better data on fish stocks • Ending public subsidies to commercial fisheries • Ocean salmon regulation • Albacore

  7. Randy’s points: • At least 1.2 million Californians go ocean fishing every year • Marine anglers spend $2.4 billion annually (Dep’t. of Commerce, 2001) • Sport license fees are the lion’s share of fishery management funds

  8. F&G Commission meeting, Crescent City,Oct. 25, 2002As F&G was proposing drastic sport fishing restrictions, Randy attended, with the message:“we want our fishery back”.

  9. In 2003, Randy was appointed to the Ground fish Advisory Sub panel of the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC), which handles many species important to recreational anglers.

  10. July 1, 2003Randy was instrumental in the appointment of Darrell Ticehurst to the PFMC, the federal body which sets many saltwater fishing regulations.

Randy at 7/28/03 news conference: • MBNMS Advisory Council (SAC) meeting public hearing is in 2 days • Recreational anglers are the #1 user of MBNMS • Of 24 seats on the SAC, none represents recreational fishing • SAC needs to appoint members from recreational anglers and charter vessel fleets

  12. Coastside Fishing ClubFundraiser for RFAFeb. 26, 2004 • Held at Elks lodge in San Mateo. • Randy took the role of the local host, welcoming RFA National President Jim Donofrio. • Jim announced that Randy now had a paid position with RFA as the West Coast Regional Director.

  13. Coastside Fishing ClubFundraiser for RFAFeb. 26, 2004 • An election was held to choose a Chapter President, and Bob Franko was the unanimous choice. • A raffle was held ,raising over $30,000(?), which Jim giddily announced was by far the most ever raised for RFA.

  15. Saturday, 8/14/04 • Cen-Cal competition meet at Albion • Randy was the weighmaster • Most of the fish were donated to the RFA fund raiser • Randy got the fish cleaned and taken to Ft. Bragg

  16. August 15, 2004 Randy was killed by a great white shark while abalone diving about 10 miles north of Fort Bragg at Kibesillah Rock. He and his buddy were about 150 feet off the Mendocino coast in about 15 feet of water.

  17. Burial at sea was held on Saturday, August 28 off the Mendocino Coast. Three local party boats, and several private boats, returned to the area near Kibesillah Rock where Randy was killed to scatter his ashes.A barbecue was held afterward across from the Noyo Fishing Center.

  18. A second memorial was held on Saturday, September 11 at 4 pm at Half Moon Bay. • After a day of fishing, a barbecue was held. • 150-200 people participated. • Many speakers from various groups eulogized Randy.

Precautions to take • Fish or ab in kelp forested areas • Use scuba rather than breathhold • Get speared fish out of the water • Rock pick rather that dive for abs • Avoid areas near marine mammals • Minimize time spent lying on the surface • Dive with a partner • Don’t swim in reduced light conditions

  22. 1954 - 2004 • Randy grew up in the Fresno area. • He leaves behind his mother Velora, who lives in Auburn, a brother and a sister, an ex-wife, a grown son. • He also leaves Natalie, the girlfriend he wanted to marry.
